Key Question: Are you ready to receive the Lord’s Supper?

1. There is a Backward Look. (v. 24-25)
1. There is a Backward Look. (v. 24-25)
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
(
Remember so that we never forget that we are not where we are by our own good efforts or anything we did.
“And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place.”
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
Remember that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for our bondage!
23 times in the book of Deuteronomy Moses tells the people to remember.
2. There is an Inward Look. (v. 27-31)
2. There is an Inward Look. (v. 27-31)
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.
For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
“examine” literally to “put to test the genuineness of themselves”
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
You bring judgment on yourself if you eat unworthily. Don’t miss the partaking rather repent and get right with God.
-
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
3. There is an Outward Look. (v. 26)
3. There is an Outward Look. (v. 26)
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
“proclaim” in this context is more about the idea of proclamation by action rather than by speaking. Although both are essential this is the form in which this term is used here.
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
“ But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
At the point of salvation we become a witness for Him, that is by our actions (i.e. what we partake in) and through sharing the word (testifying and witnessing).
Proclaim here is meant also to do it continually, even now!
4. There is an Upward Look. (v. 26)
4. There is an Upward Look. (v. 26)
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
The point in which we are “freed” from proclaiming Him is at the point of his second coming.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
Jesus has gone to finish His work in Heaven for us therefore we must be faithful to the “work” He has left for us to do!

CONCLUSION
Get right with God and others as the Lord provokes your heart.
