And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.
In today’s day and age. When we think of ourselves, or when we talk about ourselves. What do we think or talk about? We usually talk about our Job, our school, our certificates and qualifications. Correct? We think that what we are now is the result of what we have done in our lives for ourselves.

In today’s day and age. When we think of ourselves, or when we talk about ourselves. What do we think or talk about? We usually talk about our Job, our school, our certificates ( ae ka san lup long) and qualifications. Correct? We think that what we are now is the result of what we have done in our lives for ourselves. ( raw mii wan nit pen prowaa raw ma cak nay duay). But the truth is that who we are today has alot to do with where we come from. Our roots. What happens on our family line affects us. I don’t know if you have noticed this in your own life. But many times we behave a certain way in our lives because of what has happened in our family line. For example, in my family line, my father’s side is very loud. when we get together with my aunties and uncles, It is always very loud. My father’s family also likes music, so I have a (Yaad) cousins who sing, play guitar and drum. And they also love to eat. And because of that I sing and play music too. From my mother’s side, ( May tum taam khon en nay nay) (Tang mae kong phome)My mother is not easily influenced by what people say. She will do what she believes is right.
My aunties ( Yaa)are also like that. They don’t really care what others will say. So in a way i’m also like that. There are many other things that is in my family line that has made me the way I am. If we look into our family life we may begin to see that God has a plan for our family line. How did God bring us to come to know him?
Today we will look at the genealogy of Jesus and see what has been happening in the family line of Jesus and what God has been doing and is going to do. If we look at , we will see that the beginning of Matthew is very different from the other writers of the gospels.
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us,
Luke 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
All the other gospels (pra kit ti khun) Lem un start by introducing and talking about Jesus. But in Matthew starts with a genealogy of Jesus. Why did Matthew do this? Is it because Matthew just wanted to be different from the rest? ( Phra kum pii tuk ton day rup kan don cay cak phra caw.)Since all of the Bible is written by people who were inspired by the Holy spirit, it means that every verse in the Bible is purposefully written in the Bible for a purpose. God has a purpose for inspiring Matthew to write about the genealogy of Jesus Christ. So what does the genealogy of Jesus tell us?
12 In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And when Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14 she took off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” 17 He answered, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And she said, “If you give me a pledge, until you send it—” 18 He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19 Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood. 20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite to take back the pledge from the woman’s hand, he did not find her. 21 And he asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was at Enaim at the roadside?” And they said, “No cult prostitute has been here.” 22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I have not found her. Also, the men of the place said, ‘No cult prostitute has been here.’ ” 23 And Judah replied, “Let her keep the things as her own, or we shall be laughed at. You see, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her.”
Gen 38:12-
1. God’s promise to bless the nations (Phra caw san ya waa ca wei pon thang lok)
12 In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
God’s promise to bless the nations
God’s promise to bless the nations
In the first verse it says
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
It says the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The name Jesus was given when he was circumcised . The title Christ was only used when Jesus was about to start his ministry at age 30. So this genealogy begins with the coming of the Christ. This genealogy starts with the end in mind. Telling us that this is the beginning of God’s plan. When God called Abraham, God already has a plan to send Jesus as the Christ.
2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
Then after that, it says that Jesus Christ was the ( Chua say) son of David and ( Phu suu takun) Abraham. What did God promise Abraham when God called Abraham?
Then after this verse, it talks about 2 people.
18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
God promised Abraham that he will bless the world through the Children of Abraham. And how was God going to bless the nations through Abraham’s family? Through then messiah who is going to come through his family line. The messiah will come through the line of David also.
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
mt 20:31
31 The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!”
That’s why the crowds called Jesus the Son of David. The Messiah will come from the kingly line of David. So the genealogy starts with the promise of God that a saviour of the world will come and that God will bless the world.
2. God does his work through ordinary people’s lives.
If we look at the list one thing that we notice is that almost all of the people mentioned are all men except for 4 who are women. In the Jewish culture, (may hay kwan sam kan kup phu yin) woman did not have very good social standing. The jewish man will thank God every morning that he was not born a woman and that he was not a gentile Chao tang chat). Women were consider as goods which people traded with each other. Thank God that we don’t live in those times and culture.
If you were writing this genealogy as a Jew, you would not put in the names of women. And if you had to put in the names of women, you would not put in these 4 women. Who were these woman who were the ancestors of Jesus Christ? The first woman was Tamar. She tricked her father in law (Phor Taa) to have children with her because both her husbands had died and she wanted to preserve her family line. The second woman in this list was Rahab. Do you know who is that? She was the prostitute who helped the 2 spies who Joshua sent to spy the land of Jericho. Because she helped them she was saved from death and also a sinful life. After the Israelites had taken Jericho, Rahab entered into the community of the Israelites. From her she married Salmon and had a Son called Boaz.
Do you know who is Boaz? You can find him in the book of Ruth. Ruth was a Moabite woman who came to Israel with her mother in law ( Mae yay)Naomi. And because of her faithfulness to Naomi, Boaz took notice of her and ( Kuu Chi wit) redeemed her. He married her and had a son named Obed. This is significant because in the old testament, Moabites were not allowed to be in the community of the Israelites. Then Obed had a son whose name was Jesse. Jesse became the father of King David.
And from King David came Solomon. Who was Solomon’s mother? In this verse, it did not state her name. But She was the wife of Uriah whom King David killed because he had an ( ruang pra wae nii) affair with his wife Bathsheba.
If you were to write a Genealogy of the Saviour of the world, would you write about these people? Or would you write about some other people in the family like Sarah, Rachel. Who did had better reputations. Why did Matthew put in these 4 women whose lives were so broken and who were outcasts. First they were women and they were all foreigners. They did not have a place with the Israelites. Secondly, at least 3 of them were involved in sexual immorality.
3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,
Matt 1:
Mat
4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,
We are just like these women. We are not Jews, we are gentiles and if we look at our lives, we are not much different from these woman in our sinfulness. But God chose to work through the lives of these people to fulfill his purpose in their lives.Did you think that Rahab the prostitute would think that the saviour of the world would be one of her grandchildren? Do you think that Ruth would ever think that she will have a king in her line? No. I’m sure they had no clue. If we notice, each of these people who becided to obey god in their lives bacame a blessing to the next generation.
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
3. God continues his work through our lives.
From verses 7-12, It talks about the many kings that led Judah and Israel. Most of the kings were bad and led the people away from God. So in the end , God sent Babylon to conquer Judah and bring them to Babylon.
God’s people rebelled against God. and God warned them many times to come back to God. But they did not listen to God so God sent Babylon to capture them. They did not believe that God would be faithful to God and they did not obey God. And because of that God brought judgement upon them they were taken from their homeland brought to Babylon. They did not believe that God would judge them. It is the same today too. nobody believes that there will be a judgement when we disobey God too. But it is clearly stated in the Bible that we will all be Judged by Jesus when we die. This may be bad news, but this bad news tells us of the good news which is the coming of the savior.
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.
In verse 16 it ends with the coming of the Christ. The promised Son that is to come from Abraham and also the king that will come from David’s line. It began talking about the Christ and it ends with the Christ. The blessing to the nations of the world.
If jesus has these sinful people as his family, we should not be surprised that he has such people as his disciples.
This genealogy starts with the end in mind.
It is fulfilled in the coming of the Lord Jesus and before Jesus went to heaven, Jesus gave us the great commision to carry the gospel to the rest of the earth, thus blessing the all the earth.
2. The redeeming of the exiles
If Jesus has these sinful people as his family, we should not be surprised that he has such people as his disciples.
God’s dealings are with actual ppl not ideal ppl
God used all the messy stuff in the genealogy to accomplish his purposes. God is far greater.
The line of Jesus consisted of moral outcasts.
The line of Jesus ethnically diverse. Preach to a sinful world.
Would you choose yourself?
It is fulfilled in the coming of the Lord Jesus and before Jesus went to heaven, Jesus gave us the great commission to carry the gospel to the rest of the earth, thus blessing the all the earth.
It is fulfilled in the coming of the Lord Jesus and before Jesus went to heaven, Jesus gave us the great commision to carry the gospel to the rest of the earth, thus blessing the all the earth.
It is fulfilled in the coming of the Lord Jesus and before Jesus went to heaven, Jesus gave us the great commision to carry the gospel to the rest of the earth, thus blessing the all the earth.
Just like the people in this passage, we are in the linage of Jesus Christ. So the story of salvation continues with us. What will your story look like when we die? will we be people like Bethsheba or will we be like Ruth who was faithful to God and blessed her children.
We are all part of the big picture.
