Introduction to Proverbs

Author: Solomon is the principal contributor
Among Hebrews is aka “ Proverbs of Solomon”
In Latin it is know as “Book of Proverbs”
SOLOMON’S BACKGROUND:
Solomon’s unprecedented wealth () was an additional gift from God (), but it was also the fruit of his understanding of business and finance. His wisdom—along with God’s blessing—produced a period of unparalleled growth and prosperity in the nation. Because of his experience with wealth, he understood greed, covetousness, and envy. He also understood that money cannot buy happiness (, ).
Solomon understood how to develop and maintain good relationships. He was honored and esteemed by the rulers of other nations. He wisely built relationships that resulted in the peace, prosperity, and security of his nation.
Solomon was well-educated in many fields of life (). He understood—more than any man or woman of his time—the wisdom of God that is manifested in creation (; ).
Solomon understood the dangers of unbridled passions and the importance of self-control with regard to sex and lust. He accumulated a harem of 1,000 wives and concubines. Many marriages were political, arranged for diplomatic purposes, but many other marriages were his choice in order to indulge his sinful desires (). To the other extreme, the Song of Solomon reveals that he also understood true love.
Solomon was the author of 3,000 proverbs (). His amazing, incomparable wisdom was displayed and shared with the world through these sayings.
Solomon was acquainted with astounding professional success but also with grievous personal failure. God used his sinful, selfish downfall to teach him the painful, hard-earned lessons that come only through experience.

HE ASK OF THE LORD
He ask for wisdom from the living God.
1 Kings 3:5–9 NASB95
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, “Ask what you wish me to give you.” 6 Then Solomon said, “You have shown great lovingkindness to Your servant David my father, according as he walked before You in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward You; and You have reserved for him this great lovingkindness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 “Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

The Lord’s response to Solomon’s Request:

c. The Lord’s response to Solomon’s Request:

1 Kings 3:10-
1 Kings 3:10–14 NASB95
10 It was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to understand justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words. Behold, I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you. 13 “I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days. 14 “If you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will prolong your days.”
d. He also collected and edited proverbs other than his own.

Ecclesiastes 12:9 NASB95
9 In addition to being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge; and he pondered, searched out and arranged many proverbs.

Christ in Proverbs

1. In Chapter 8 “wisdom” is personified and seen in its perfection.
2. It is DIVINE wisdom
Proverbs 8:22–31 NASB95
22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 23 “From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth. 24 “When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no springs abounding with water. 25 “Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills I was brought forth; 26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, Nor the first dust of the world. 27 “When He established the heavens, I was there, When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, 28 When He made firm the skies above, When the springs of the deep became fixed, 29 When He set for the sea its boundary So that the water would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth; 30 Then I was beside Him, as a master workman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 31 Rejoicing in the world, His earth, And having my delight in the sons of men.

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
The book of Proverbs is a collection and compilation of true, divinely-inspired wise sayings. They are unquestionably Scripture (). Most of these sayings originated in the mind and heart and from the mouth and hand of Solomon. We know only the names of Agur and Lemuel as the other original sources of this book. We also know that Solomon was led by God’s Spirit to include “the words of the wise”—sayings from other wise men—but have no information as to the identities of these men (22:17).

Proverbs 8:1–6 NASB95
1 Does not wisdom call, And understanding lift up her voice? 2 On top of the heights beside the way, Where the paths meet, she takes her stand; 3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, At the entrance of the doors, she cries out: 4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. 5 “O naive ones, understand prudence; And, O fools, understand wisdom. 6 “Listen, for I will speak noble things; And the opening of my lips will reveal right things.
Proverbs 8:32–35 NASB95
32 “Now therefore, O sons, listen to me, For blessed are they who keep my ways. 33 “Heed instruction and be wise, And do not neglect it. 34 “Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at my doorposts. 35 “For he who finds me finds life And obtains favor from the Lord.

It takes: DISCIPLINE
It takes: COMMITMENT
It produces: SKILL to victoriously face challenges and blessings in life. They both need to be manage well.
THERE ARE MANY ROADS TO TAKE IN LIFE, THE WISES WAY IS CALLED PROVERBS WAY. AS WE BEGIN TO STUDY THIS BOOK LET US LOOK FOR JESUS. AFTER ALL:
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Proverbs (King James Version) A. The Wise Path of Life (Part 1): Study the Book of Proverbs, 1:1–7

Proverbs are generalized statements of what is usually true in life, and they must not be treated like promises … “A soft answer turns away wrath” (15:1, NKJV) in most instances, but our Lord’s lamblike gentleness didn’t deliver Him from shame and suffering … “The righteous man is rescued from trouble, and it comes on the wicked instead” (11:8), but millions of Christian martyrs testify to the fact that the statement isn’t an absolute in this life.1

Proverbs 11:8 NASB95
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, But the wicked takes his place.
Takes Christ life on Earth as an example: He suffered and died.
