English Text: : [16] Behold, I am sending all of you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise people as serpents and innocent as doves. [17] But watch out for men because they will deliver you up to Sanhedrin, and flog you before synagogues. [18] And you will be brought before governors and kings on account of me as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. [19] And when you are delivered up do not be anxious about how or what to speak. Because it will be given in that hour what to speak. [20] Because it is not you the ones speaking, but the Spirit of your heavenly Father speaking in you. [21] But brother will deliver brother to death and a father a child, and children rise against parents and put them to death. [22] And you will be hated by everyone on account of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. [23] But when they persecute you in this city, escape to another. Opening Illustration: Before every battle, the commander of the army stands before his soldiers and gives them a charge. This charge includes what the mission is, the reality of the dangers, but why the goal of it all makes it worth it. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Return of the King, Aragorn says. “I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”
We see something of this charge in chapter 10. Jesus has appointed twelve disciples to preach the gospel. Here we have Jesus stating the mission: Preach the gospel starting from Israel and eventually to the Gentile world as well (which only begins to happen after Jesus pours out his Spirit at Pentecost). The dangers that lie ahead in this mission: 16-25; 34-39. Comfort in the midst of challenges: 26-33. And the reason why it’s all worth it: 40-42. This whole chapter is a part of Jesus’s charge to his disciples to prepare for the suffering that they are about to face on account of preaching the gospel. And in today’s passage, I want to point out four things that Jesus says will happen to his followers, particularly to those who preach the gospel.

Sheep: Stupid and defenseless.
Wolves: Attack the defenseless sheep.
Cunning as serpents: Exercise the best of wisdom. Like Paul, sometimes it means to flee and sometimes it means to stay.
Innocent as doves: While being faultless and blameless in everything they do.
v.17-18:
Persecution will be by both Jews and Gentiles - wherever Christians are in this world.
The reason why they will be persecuted is for Christ’s sake.

Paul was beheaded by Emperor Nero in 66.
Around the same time, Peter, at his request, was crucified upside down since he felt he was not worthy to die like his Lord.
Andrew is said to have been crucified in Greece.
Thomas is said to have been killed by men with spears.
Philip was killed cruelly by a government official for converting his wife in North Africa.
Matthew is said to have been killed in Ethiopia.
Bartholomew died as a martyr for Christ.
James was stoned and beaten to death probably in Syria.
Simon, the zealot, was killed in Persia for refusing to sacrifice to the sun god.
Matthias, the one who replaced Judas, was killed by burning.
In the first century, Emperor Nero would get Christians dressed like animals and wild dogs would tear them to pieces or they were crucified or used as human torches at night to give light.
In the second century, in the country of Tunisia, two young women and new converts, Perpetua and Felicitas, were jailed, and then killed by the sword for not denying Christ.
In the fourth century, in the country of Armenia, 40 unnamed soldiers were killed by being stripped naked and tied to posts on ice, posed them for others for six days, burned their bodies and threw them in the river.
In the twenty-first century, just a few years ago, two brothers were burnt alive for their faith in Libya by ISIS.
In Egypt, Christians were made to kneel down by the beach while the persecutors beheaded them on video.

The Divine Godhead is present in their suffering for the honour of Christ and in preaching the gospel to a lost people.
Jesus says that his Father is their father too. And he will help them in time of need by giving them the Holy Spirit.
The comfort is not that your faith will hold you up, but the God himself will hold you up.

Polycarp (ca. 69 – ca. 155) Second century bishop of Smyrna. According to the Martyrdom of Polycarp, he died a martyr when he was stabbed: “Leave me as I am, the one who gives me strength to endure the fire will also give me strength to stay quite still on the pyre., even without the precaution of your nails…. For eighty and six years I have been his servant, and he has done me no wrong, and how can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”
Application: If you are afraid you might not endure, remember that the Holy Spirit has been promised to give you words and strength to speak in the hour of need. You are promised by your Saviour to be received by himself when you die. So should such a time come to you, suffer well and die with confidence. Peter’s example reinforces this idea.
