Sermon Scripture

Acts 2:1–3 NASB95PARA
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
Luke wrote this book, addressed to Theopolis, but the author is the Holy Spirit giving us what we are to know.
Acts is more like the Acts of Christ than that of the apostles
Paul and apostle out of due season - special to the gentiles
We know from scripture that we are not building the church of God but that He is.
Matheus has just been named an aposlte in place of Judas
Acts 2:1 NASB95PARA
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
Should say “with one accord or with one mind, in the same place”
The Sovereignty of God
Displayed in the rampant growth of the church
The Day of Pentecost had fully come
Present passive infinitive- we have reached the day of pentecost…it was in the process of being complete
The feast of the harvest in gathering - first fruits of the gathering. fiftieth day after Passover counting from the second day of the Feast
Sabbath or first day after which could be any day of the week. We don’t know because the Jewish Sabbath fell on the first day of the week, but that was every day of the week because the calendar was kept by phases of the moon.
All together in one place...Should say “with one accord or with one mind, in the same place”
You can do one of two things with this:
Label this as the example - this is humanistic
All = means absolutely everyone of them being at least 120. This is an indication of the greatness of God and His control over this time and meating. They are all there and of the same mind because of God’s sovereign direction and control.
This first verse is a clear indication that God is in control of this situation. It is impossible to get a group of christians together in one accord…the picture here is of the body of Christ - sitting (not praying, not singing hymns…)
Acts 2:2 NASB95PARA
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Suddenly from heaven
Noise like a violent rushing wind
This is not describing wind, but a noice which sounded like a violent rushing wind. There is no wind. Violent rushing wind carries the noise as a freight train. You’ll soon learn loud enough for people to hear blocks away
The concentration here is not on tongues but on wind and fire.
When God made Adam, He breathed into his nostrils the breath of lives
The plural of majesty in Hebrew - that is how Jews would see it…not a trinity
a few verses later God says “let us” - those Hebrew pronouns cannot be
I believe it may be plural because Adam has a physical and spiritual life
Christ said unless you are born of water and wind (spirit)
Throughout the word of God the Holy Spirit is characterized by wind.
The Holy Spirit is present here
Our minds should go to the words of Christ: It is imperative to you that I go away or the helper (the Holy Spirit) wont come.
What we see here is those who have been commanded to wait by God until
filled the whole house (where they were sitting)
filled: to carry out to the full. The noise was not lacking in any part of the house…it was more than sufficient
You cannot use up God’s power.
When John the baptist introduced Christ he said
Luke 3:16 NASB95PARA
16 John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John 4:1–2 NASB95PARA
1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were),
This is the primary illustration of the identification that Christ gives to His church.
This is the primary illustration of the identification that Christ gives to His church.
This is the primary illustration of the identification that Christ gives to His church.
The text appears to say that this mighty sound filling the house more than enough, the disciples were sitting there.
Acts 2:
Acts 2:3 NASB95PARA
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
Appeared to them tongues as of fire (distributing themselves)
divided - seperate going to each
tounge - an organ of speech
they appeared as, like that of fire (purifying, holiness of God)
Notice how precise the greek is:
vs 1 - vs 3 - vs 6 -vs8 all say “every one of them
vs 3
vs 6
vs8
Fire= used throughout scripture to represent God’s presence
illustration of God’s pressence - a purifing presence.
terms that we understand: wind & fire
The sound as of a mighty rushing or violent wind - you know that sound - freight train
The appearance
Rested on each of them - means to fix ones dwelling place.
John 1:26 NASB95PARA
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
Luke 3:16 NASB95PARA
16 John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
notice where the Holy Spirit fixed His abode, his dwelling…upon each and everyone of them.
a holy, purifying organ of communication from God (the heavens) makes it’s abode within man who is called of Him.
Fire= used throughout scripture to represent God’s presence
John 1:26–27 NASB95PARA
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
illustration of God’s pressence - a purifyng presence.
The emphasis is that God has sent His great comforter of promise and His comforter has taken its great abode in us. It’s life giving purifying presence. Because of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit we have a communion with God.
John 1:26–28 NASB95PARA
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
John 1:26–30 NASB95PARA
26 John answered them saying, “I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27 It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’
