The Love Friendship

John 15:9–17 NKJV
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another.
Recap
Last week we learned about the vine and the vine dresser.
That people are cut off or they are pruned. So that they may bear more fruit for the glory of God. We also learned that we must abide in him and him in us, but more than that his words must abide in us.
His Word is crucial for us to have relationship with Jesus to abide in him and him in us comes from us being in the word.
This week we learn of the way of love and how to abide in love.
Love
We all seek it and desire it.
People show love and receive love in different ways dont they. I have recently taken the enneagram test and been reading a lot about those.
It is clear as you read them that people will show and receive love different, but that is not to say that love is not universally something that we can give, receive and recognize.
Love according to children
“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.”—Rebecca, age 8
“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.”—Billy, age 4
“Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French Fries without making them give you any of theirs.”—Chrissie, age 6
“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.”—Terri, age 4
“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.”—Danny, age 7
“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.”—Nikka, age 6
“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.”—Noelle, age 7
“Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.”—Tommy, age 6
“My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.”—Clare, age 6
“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.”—Elaine, age 5
“You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.”—Jessica, age 8
Love?
Love can also be misunderstood, over simplified, redefined and abused cant it?
I Love Pizza, Love Trumps Hate, Love has no gender,
There are a lot opinions on what love is and what it should look like.
I Believe we need to let God define love and he does so in scripture and even an article in Time magazine agrees.
Time - Love
So lets go to the word and learn from Jesus about real love.
Redefine love
The word is mostly used according to the first definition given in the dictionary: “an intense feeling of deep affection.” In other words, love is what one feels.
“Love should be seen not as a feeling but as an enacted emotion. To love is to feel and act lovingly.”
Then the article quotes and shows that the first time love shows up in the bible its not in a romantic sense but between a parent and child.
So lets go to the word and learn from Jesus about real love.
Text
A wonderful text that we need to explore, believe and apply to our life.
John 15:9 NKJV
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.
The Father is the constant, he is what we test everything by, Pure and true love comes from him and can be understood by looking to him.
There is love with in the trinity, and it is that loving relationship that we are invited into.
John 15:10 NKJV
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
Love in obedience? Is that how we would define love in the world today?
Why and how is this different? Not relative
is it better? Has a constant to judge and determine love by
John 15:11 NKJV
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 15:10
Jesus is concerned with our joy
John 15:12 NKJV
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
this is for joy
life is better so is church, family and community even society
John 15:13 NKJV
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
self sacrifing love lets be clear about it.
not self seeking
John 15:13
John 15:14 NKJV
You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
strange verse
Jesus has laid out the terms for what a friend of his looks like.
you can not be a friend of jesus if you dont emulate his love
wholistic view of salvation
John 15:15 NKJV
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
do you know what god is doing? what he does do? what his patterns are like? what his desires are?
if not it is because you are not in his word
John 15:16 NKJV
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
the purpose is fruit
seek his will
ask and receive
John 15:17 NKJV
These things I command you, that you love one another.
close it up
love
Romans 13:8 NIV
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
1 Corinthians 13:13 ESV
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
a simular challenge to last week
