Introduction
When God created us, He created us according to His own image. In , God declared His creation as ‘very good’ after He created man. God’s created us in perfection but this was broken and has been tainted because of man’s disobedience. When God instructed Adam not to eat the fruit that gives knowledge to good and evil, which is the in the midst of the garden, Eve, the first woman fall into temptation. But thanks be to God which according to His great mercy has redeemed us through the blood of His only Son Jesus Christ.
Because of sin, Christ’s supremacy in the hearts of man has been dethroned by his own deceit. Though Christ’s position as supreme above all things does not change from the past unto eternity, our hearts being darkened and deceived has lost its ability to discern what the will of God. We have lost our ability to please God by acknowledging the supremacy of Christ in our lives.
Now, our objective during this study is that ‘Everyone may understand the depth, length, wide, and height of the love of God to us through Christ. So that we may be filled with knowledge and wisdom of Christ. And that we may acknowledge the supremacy of Christ in our lives as we walk daily with Him.’
Now let us open our bible in
9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Let us pray.
Because of sin, our good relationship with God has been broken. The perfect image of God has been tainted by our sinful flesh. That’s why when the bible declares that “There is none who seeks after God”, it is because of the broken relationship which no human works can ever mend/heal.
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
10 As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
Romans 3:
And ‘All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory’
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
But thanks be to God, in spite of our sinful nature, God has unveiled His great plan even in the beginning after the fall of Adam and Eve to sin.
In
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
This enmity is Christ who
God’s perfect creation has been tainted with sins. The image of God in the life of every man has been distorted by the craft of evil.
But thanks God. There is a good news. The good news is that Christ is supreme above all things.
In , we are going to see ‘Christ’ Supremacy: In our Deliverance’
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
Even from the beginning after the fall of man, God had unveiled His great plan for us for us to be delivered from our sins.
In
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”
Christ is the enmity who had bruised the enemy in his head through
Christ’ Supremacy: In our Deliverance
Christ’ Supremacy: In our Deliverance
There are two (2) things in this principle:
Over the power of Darkness
Over the power of Darkness
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
Romans 6:5-
There is no other power that can dominate the supremacy of Christ.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Colossians 1:16
There is a spiritual battle which we are fighting on.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:37-
Romans 8:
Yes, who shall separate us from the love of Christ when even death He has conquered?
He has not only supreme in His deliverance to us from the power of darkness but also, ‘Into the power of His Death’
Into the power of His Death
Into the power of His Death
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
Colossians 1:
God’s deliverance for humankind does not come without a price.
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—
Colossians 1:21
Because of God’s holiness, no man can mediate over us to God. So God, made a way. He gave His only Son to be the peace maker, our mediator, so that we can be reconciled with God. God gave His only begotten Son to be born as man like us, to be crucified on the cross.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
Romans 6:7
Thanks to Christ’s supremacy over death, as death does not have dominion over us. And that because of His death, we now can live, live for Him.
By acknowledging Christ’ supremacy over sin and death, we should live our life for Him.
Now, let’s take a look how God should have supremacy in our daily walk.
Christ’ Supremacy: In our Daily walk
Christ’ Supremacy: In our Daily walk
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Colossians 1:10
By acknowledging Christ’ supremacy, we should walk with Him.
Our walk with Christ should be rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith filled with thanksgiving.
7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
This only can happen our life is ‘filled with the knowledge of His will’
Filled with the knowledge of His will
Filled with the knowledge of His will
9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Why it is important that we should be filled with the knowledge of His will?
8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:8
*** Issue of legalism ***
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Colossians
15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Colossians 2:
By knowing Christ and knowing His works and His will, we will know the perfect will of God and will not be deceived by any works of man.
18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Colossians 2:
So let us not subject ourselves from the legalistic mentality brought by the doctrine of man.
20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—
23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
Colossians 2:
Ephesians 1:17-
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power
“that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power”
Fruitful in every good work
Fruitful in every good work
Finally, being Fruitful in every good work.
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Colossians 1:10
Set your mind on things above
2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Colossians 3:
**not displayed**
5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,
Colossians 3:
7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
Colossians 3:
Put off our old man
8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.
Colossians 3:
Put on the new man
Colossians 3:
10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
“renewed” - the tainted image of God has been renewed through the work of Jesus Christ.
24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Characters of the new man
Colossians 3:12-15
12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Colossians 3:
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Remember this principle, we cannot be fruitful apart from God.
We must acknowledge Christ as supreme above everything in our everyday living so we will be able to experience Him.
