Matthew
Began with the Angel telling Joseph not to fear taking Mary as his wife. (Mat1:20)
Protected from a Jealous Herod. Wise men warned in a dream not to return to Herod.
Angel sends Joseph & family to Egypt. (Herod kills 2yr old males & under)
(Mat2:14)
Brought out of Egypt, and Hidden in Galilee/Nazareth. (Joseph warned in a dream).
Hidden in Nazareth.
Matthew 3:17 ESV
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Before this:
Protected.
Began with the Angel telling Joseph not to fear taking Mary as his wife. (Mat1:20)
Protected from a Jealous Herod. Wise men warned in a dream not to return to Herod.
Angel sends Joseph & family to Egypt. (Herod kills 2yr old males & under)(Mat2:14)
(Mat2:14)
Brought out of Egypt, and Hidden in Galilee/Nazareth. (Joseph warned in a dream).
Now: Announcement! Who was listening and watching?
(Jesus had been delivered un God’s service, just as Israel had.) what Israel had failed to do Jesus would do perfectly.
Matthew 4:1 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Immediately, Spirit Drove Jesus
Physical, Emotional, Spiritual trauma. Tells us about Jesus.
Reminder (from last week):
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
sympathize: “have a fellow feeling with”
//
4:1 Parallel with Israel. Concept of “Wilderness”.
Deuteronomy 8:2 ESV
And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
(Also, )
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Matthew 4:2 ESV
And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Not 40 years like Israel, but 40 days and nights.
Physical, Emotional, Spiritual trauma. Tells us about Jesus.
Israel’s Response:
Exodus 16:2
Exodus 16:2–3 ESV
And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Exodus 17:3
Exodus 17:3 ESV
But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”
Exodus 17:7 ESV
And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Mindset?
Focus on the flesh… gave themselves over to the desire of the flesh.
Matthew 4:3 ESV
And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
Exoudus 17:7
Question: Would Jesus do the same? Would he give himself over to this intense desire for food. Would he put the desire in place of God? Would he trust God?
Reminds me of this:
Daniel 3:17–18 ESV
If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Matthew 4:4 ESV
But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Jesus’ temptation: even if God would let you die of hunger in this desert...
Whether I get food or not, I will serve God.
God is #1. I will not serve this golden calf that [satan] has set up. Nothing before God.
Matthew 4:5–6 ESV
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
turns out the devil knows his stuff:
Psalm 91:11–12 ESV
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
Matthew 4:5 ESV
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple
Testing God’s provision for him; for those who make God their dwelling place (9-10).
“Okay, he’s your #1; Let’s see how he feels about you...”
Testing God’s perfect plan. [Jump to Life.] Make him end your suffering.
Is God here with you or not? Force his hand.
Matthew 4:7 ESV
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Israel’s response:
Exodus 17:3 ESV
But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”
xodus 17:3
Exodus 17:7 ESV
And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Matthew 4:8 ESV
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
Matthew 4:8–9 ESV
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
Faustian Bargain: dissatisfied (living as a man?) and bargains with the devil, exchanging his soul for gain.
Very personal for Jesus, I think.
Dissatisfied with this whole Son of Man thing. I mean the promise is yours… why go through all this… I’ll just give it to you now.
Psalm 2:7–8 ESV
I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
Psalm 2:7-8
Matthew 4:10 ESV
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Matthew
Matthew 4:11 ESV
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
James 4:7 ESV
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 1:12 ESV
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
(8 - draw near to God)
Revelation 2:10 ESV
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
James
We don’t know what ministering angels did, however we know how an angel ministered to Elijah as he fled Jezebel:
In the wilderness; under extreme stress (and even asked to die).
1 Kings 19:5–7 ESV
And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.”
Served as more credentialing for who Jesus was. He sits at the right hand of God; a King with the crown of Life.
1 Kings 19
James 1:12 ESV
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Revelation 2:10 ESV
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Rev
Ephesians 6:10 ESV
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
The devil will leave you.
Lead us not into temptation (but into faith - strength and might) (we all have our time in the wilderness); but (when it happens) deliver us from the evil one!
Hebrews 12:6 ESV
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
