Love
We have been learning about the commands Jesus gave to His followers.
We have been learning the stories about the commands Jesus gave to His followers. Before Jesus was betrayed, arrested, and killed, he had a very important meal with His closest followers to show them a way to always remember the sacrifice He made for them through His death. This meal Jesus had with His disciples became known as the Lord’s Supper and it continues to be practiced by followers of Jesus in the church today.

Jesus and His closest followers arrived in the city during the time of an important religious festival. Judas was one of Jesus’ closest followers, but he made a deal with the religious leaders to betray Jesus for money. They were waiting to find the best time to arrest Jesus quietly without any crowds around.

When evening came, Jesus and His twelve disciples all sat down at the table to share the meal together. As they reclined at the table, Jesus said, “I have eagerly desired to have this meal with you before I suffer. I will not eat of this meal again until God’s plan has been fulfilled.” While they were eating, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it to give to His followers. He said, “Take and eat this because it represents My body which is broken for you. Do this to remember Me.” After this He also took the cup of wine and said, “Drink from this cup, all of you, for this represents the shedding of My blood which

After this meal, Judas led the religious leaders to come arrest Jesus when He was away from the crowd.
After this meal, Judas led the religious leaders to come arrest Jesus when He was away from the crowd. Jesus was arrested, beaten, and killed. But three days later He came back to life and for forty days He appeared to many of His followers.
Jesus was arrested, beaten, and killed. But three days later He came back to life and for forty days He appeared to many of His followers.
The followers of Jesus continued to obey His commands. They gathered together as the church to pray, share with one another, love one another, and to share in this meal that Jesus taught them to remember. As time passed, one of the first churches began to be disobedient to the commands of Jesus. They were coming together to take of this meal, but they were having tension and division between them.

As time passed, one of the first churches began to be disobedient to the commands of Jesus.
They were coming together to take of this meal, but they were having tension and division between them.
So one of Jesus’ followers named Paul wrote a letter to this church. He told them, “You should not be coming together in a way that causes such division. You come to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us, yet you will not show love and sacrifice to one another. This should not be! Don’t forget the reason we take this meal.
So one of Jesus’ followers named Paul wrote a letter to this church (1 Corinthians 11:17-32). He told them, “You should not be coming together in a way that causes such division.
You come to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us, yet you will not show love and sacrifice to one another. This should not be! Don’t forget the reason we take this meal.
Then Paul reminded them what Jesus had taught them. He said, “Jesus told us, ‘This bread is My body which is broken for you. Eat it to remember Me. And this cup represents My blood that was shed for you to be in right relationship with God.’” He said, “Brothers and sisters, whenever you eat of this meal you are telling the world about the sacrifice Jesus has made for us. So when you come together, first examine yourself to make sure you are putting into action the things you say you believe.”

And the church continued to grow and learn how to be obedient followers of Jesus.

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself” (, ESV).

The congregation only has to repeat after each phrase. “It would have been enough.”
“It would have been enough.”
“It would have been enough.”
If we knew Jesus as Savior but we were never promised me eternal life.
It would have been enough us.
If we knew Jesus as Savior, were promised eternal life and never knew that He experienced our pain
It would have been enough for us
If we knew Jesus as Savior, were promised eternal life, knew that he experienced our pain but were not given His words and strength.
It would have been enough for us.
If we knew Jesus as Savior, were promised eternal life, knew that he experienced our pain, were given His words and strength and never knew Him as friend.
It would have been enough for us.
If we knew Jesus as Savior, were promised eternal life, knew that He experienced our pain, were given His words and strength, knew Him as friend but never had a chance to have a spiritual family.
If we knew Jesus as Savior, were promised eternal life, knew that He experienced our pain, were given His words and strength, knew Him as friend but never had a chance to have a spiritual family.
It would have been enough for us.
But we do and He did.
Jesus wanted us to remember. My prayer is that we will remember and experience the power of His sacrifice and every time we celebrate the Lord’s Supper we get a little closer to the glory of Christ.
