Don’t let it be divisive

There is not a hotter topic than this in the scripture, well maybe except for the point of salvation. This has caused many fractures in the Christiandom, and even within the Church of Christ too. This should not be a divisive issue, nor make it a salvation issue, so to speak.
We have recently looked at the promise of the Holy spirit (Act1:8); the prophesies about the coming of the Holy Spirit from Joel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, as well as John and Jesus Himself. we have seen the declaring of the outpouring of the Spirit (Act2:16) and finally the promise to all who repent and believe (Act2:38-39)
_____________________________________________________________
Holy Spirit was to come with power (Act1:8)
As was prophesied by Joel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, John and Jesus
The declaring this is that by Peter (Act2:16)
And the promise of the gift to all who believe (Act2:38-39)
Unity of the Spirit only includes one baptism (Eph4:3-6)
_____________________________________________________________
Questions that are often raised
Is the baptism of the Holy Spirit for us today?
What exactly is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
May I state from the start tonight; the scripture does not speak of “the baptism of the Holy Spirit.” - in fact if you look at Eph4:3-6 at the One’s you would see that the Unity of the Spirit declared there includes only one baptism.
The One baptism is the One commanded by Christ
One available to all (Mt28:19; Mk16:16)
One for the remission of sins (Act2:38; Act22:16)
One that is in water (Act8:35-38; Act10:47-48)
One that is for washing, regeneration and renewing by the Spirit (Tit3:5) in which one is born again (Jn3:5)
Did you know that there are only limited times that baptism and Spirit are used together?
“He will baptize you with Holy Spirit.” (Mt3:11; Mk1:8)
“He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” (Jn1:33)
“You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (Act1:5; Act11:16)
That’s it, that is the extent of it, so what is this baptism of the Holy Spirit? Is it biblical?
Again, let it be said that the phrase “baptism of the Holy Spirit” is not found in the scripture, so it is not biblical. You can find the promises of Jesus baptizing with the Spirit in several places (Lk24:49; Act2:17-28, Act2:33, Act10:45; Tit3:5-6)
He promises to send Him
Luke 24:49 NKJV
49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
He promises to pour out the Spirit
Acts 2:17–18 NASB95
17 And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.
Peter states Jesus did as He promised
Acts 2:33 NASB95
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
That is also seen in Act10:45 and Tit3:5-6
So, whatever this baptism of the Holy Spirit is, it is clear that it is intertwined with the “pouring out” of the Spirit, the sending of the Spirit that occurred on the day of Pentecost as you know from Act2.
So now, let’s press on and look at some views regarding the baptism

Differing views (opinions)

May we remember that we may have differing views, but the unity of the Church comes from the unity of the Spirit, don’t let these things divide, but know we are united even in differing views.
View one: The baptism of Holy Spirit happened occasionally in the 1st century (Act2, 10, 11, 9, 8, 19)
It happened on the day of Pentecost (Act2:1-4)
The belief here is that it only happened to the apostles for the purpose of equipping them for the mission work they were to do.
It happened with Peter and Cornelius (Act10:44)
This outpouring was prior to baptism, it was not for salvation but for glorification that the Lord worked in the Gentiles now too (Act10:45-47) for their baptism did not happen until (v.48)
With Saul (Act9); with the Ephesians (Act19) and even the Samaritans (Act8)
Now this view has the miraculous manifestations of the Spirit in the people, something we do not see today. This was something for certain people then for certain purposes and this is the view of many within the church of Christ today.
View two: The baptism of the Holy Spirit is done at every conversion, at the time of baptism. (Act2:38, Act11:14-15; Jn3:5; Tit3:5; 1Cor12:13)
Repent, be baptized, receive gift of Holy Spirit (Act2:38)
At the point of faith, after hearing the word (Act11:14-15)
Acts 11:14–15 NASB95
14 and he will speak words to you by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ 15 “And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning.
Baptism followed the Holy Spirit falling upon them, for then the Holy Spirit would come in them, hence saving them (Act2:38)
Or can’t leave out one my favorites
John 3:5 NKJV
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Or even
Titus 3:5 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
we are baptized by the Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:13 NASB95
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
This view does not require the miraculous to prove the baptism of the Spirit. This is a common view of many evangelical denominations and some of the churches of Christ.
View three: The Baptism of the Spirit occurs after conversion. (Lk11:13; Act2:2; Act8, 19, 10 and 11)
Some believe the baptism of the Spirit is a second work of grace that must be sought after and asked for (Lk11:13)
Luke 11:13 NASB95
13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
but then you have what you see in Act2
Acts 2:2 NASB95
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
The outpouring, the filling was for all who were there in the house! It was more than the apostles? (question for another time)
After conversion like in Act8:17 at the laying on of hands by Peter and John
Acts 8:17 NASB95
17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.
Act8:17
The view with this is taken that the baptism is proved by the speaking of tongues seen in Act2:4)
Some facets of some denominations believe this is a must or you do not have the Spirit in you, and you must continue to ask to receive.
So, we have looked at some differing views, but now let’s try to grasp this more by looking at the context of the work of the Spirit in Jesus ministry.

Spirit in Jesus Ministry

Are you familiar with the trickle effect? Well from the original outpouring to today it maybe easy to look at a trickle effect the Spirit has. This all started with Jesus the promise, the outpouring and the work today.
Jesus poured out the Spirit on all flesh (Act2:17, 33)
Acts 2:33 NASB95
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
It was seen, it was heard! As it was promised.
Acts 2:17 NASB95
17 And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams;
It was poured out on all mankind, though the believer, the one who hears, believes, repents have the benefits of the Spirit.
See the Spirit’s work at revelation and confirmation was only temporary, because we hold the full counsel of God, that complete works needed in our hands.
The Spirits work in regeneration and sanctification is age-lasting!
(insert picture waterfall; already saved on computer)
(insert waterfall illustration) - the trickle effect as it goes down stream
So on Pentecost there was a waterfall effect, impacted everyone, a powerful impact, some for the good, some not. Some willing to receive, some were not
Impacted the apostles greatly (Act2:1-4)
Acts 2:1–2 NASB95
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:3–4 NASB95
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Down stream just a little bit, the house of Cornelius (Act10:44-47)
Acts 10:44–45 NASB95
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Acts 10:46–47 NASB95
46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”
Acts 10:46 NASB95
46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,
Notice that the outpouring there, just like Pentecost called for a response.
Down stream again, the outpouring, baptism. may not be as drastically apparent, but it is still there
Downstream in our regeneration (Tit3:5-6)
Titus 3:5–6 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
Downstream in our spiritual growth (Gal5:22-23)
Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Outpouring so as to convict the world of sin (Jn16:7-11)
Outpouring to separate the wheat from the chaff (Mt3:11-12)
outpouring to sanctify for service (Jn16:13)
All evidence of the original outpouring back on Pentecost as noted in Act2:17 which we previously looked at.
John 16:13 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
I mentioned benefits to those who believe
A gift to those who repent and are baptized (Act2:38-39)
Baptized into one body for many differing works (1Cor12:11-13)
1 Corinthians 12:11–12 NASB95
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. 12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 NASB95
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
While we know without a doubt that the Spirit empowered the apostles to be the witnesses Jesus called them to be (Act1:8) he also imparted spiritual gifts to add the in the task (MK16:17-20)
Mark 16:17–18 NASB95
17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:19–20 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
The empowering in turn was given to some others by the laying on of hands (Act8:14-17, 19:1-6) Again only temporarily needed and ceased when God’s revelation was complete (1Cor13:8-13)
1 Corinthians 13:8 NASB95
8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.
1 Corinthians 13:12 NASB95
12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
1 Corinthians 13:10–11 NASB95
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
1
The Spirit continues to work today in the life of the believer, in sanctification (1Cor6:11)
1 Corinthians 6:11 NASB95
11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
As man hears the gospel; believes and obeys not only are sins forgiven and given the gift of the Holy Spirit, then the Holy Spirit goes to work on the man from the inside out.
The Spirit continues to work today by strengthening and blessing the believer (Eph3:16, 20)
Ephesians 3:16 NASB95
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
Ephesians 3:20 NASB95
20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
The Spirit continues to work so we can walk in holiness (Rom8:11-13)
The Spirit continues to work so we can do whatever the the will of God is, until the return of Christ (Php2:11-12, 4:13 and 1The5:23)
The Spirit continues to work today; all because God is faithful and promised the Spirit through Jesus and His ministry. Until His return may we know the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the outpouring impacts us today and that it transpired on Pentecost and the ripple effect makes it possible for us to have the Spirit!
There is only One baptism that brings unity (Eph4:5)
Ephesians 4:5 NASB95
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
One baptism that brings the love of God (Tit3:4-7)
Titus 3:4–5 NASB95
4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:6–7 NASB95
6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
One baptism as commanded by Peter (Act2:38-39)
One baptism as commanded by Peter (Act2:38-39)

Hopefully through the scripture we have seen what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is all about. Be it you believe any of the view discussed tonight, the effects, the impact are the same, we are one, we are united, we are forgiven and we are sealed until the day of redemption!
