what kind of christian are you?
what kind of christian are you?
After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
john 6:1
And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
john 6:6-10
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
john 6 :11
already we have looked at to characters of this reading
Jesus who is the one who askes the question to his disciples
jesus wo is the
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
Jesus new the end from the beginning as he was and is at both.
Jesus asked the question know full well that he was able to meet the need but he wanted to see if his disciples had learnt that he was.
i guess if you stick around someone for some time you get to know what they can do but did his disciples.
Jesus knowing what he can do in God wanted to see if his followers could see the answer just as he did.
Here we see the kind of christian who spends time in the presence of God and who knows what God wants him to do and how to do it.
you might say i could not be like christ because Im not the son of God so i don’t have that direct relationship with God that Jesus has.
but we should have
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1 john
ah but i don’t have the same power as Jesus.
that right
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
john 14:12
so we can have the same relationship with God and have the same power that Jesus had to deal with the world in which we live in.
maybe you see yourself with a very close relationship with God and through your life you are demonstrating the same power as Jesus if this is you then work work work hard for the master in his Kingdom.
Last week we saw Philips response to the question he was a doubter and could not see how we could feed so many people with the human resources that they had.
here we see a christian who when posed with a challenge from God looked first to his human resources to meet the need.
This is not a bad idea to look to our human resources when possed with a problem, after all it he who has given us them in the first place.
if the problem before us is a man who is in need of a coat and we have two then we can meet that need out of our own ability.
but if the need is a house and we don’t have another to give hive are we like Philip and give a smug answer and for get all about it.
The need of a house is still there but in that moment we have said i can’t do anything about it so lets move on For getting that need we try to move on.
but you know God will keep bringing that need to your door until you recognise that you can’t do it so i must ask God to help
Asking God is not a sign of weakness its knowing your limitations and when you don’t have the answer come and asking for help.
as fathers we say to our children come lets go and ride that new bike i bought you knowing full well that the child dosn’t know how to ride it but who waits for the child to ask for some help. What pleasure is brought to the child and the father when they begin to ride the bike
G
A God’s just like that he ask us to do a task knowing full well we can’’t do it on our own and waits for the asking for help.
If you find yourself in Philip remember God is just waiting for you to ask for help. come today and ask God for his help and see how your life will change.
What about today? Today we are going to look at another disciple Andrew.
what do we know about Andrew?
Andrew a follower of john the baptist followed Jesus for a day
And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
john 1:40-42
Andrew went and found his brother peter saying we have found the Messias.
john
Andrew was a fisherman as was his brother so were used to going out and looking for and finding there food.
Andrew is only mentioned 12 times in the bible and for often than not it was as the brother of peter.
we don’t here much about him so what can we find out about him today.
Yes this very question was asked of all the disciples
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
and what did Andrew do next
he might have heard the response that Philip had given we don’t know but what we do know is that answer that he Gave to the Masters
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
john 6:
JOHN 6:8
here we see that he was mentioned as peters brother
not important enough to just carry his own name.
Have you ever been referred to as someone eles whatever
growing up i was always known as my Henry’s son
you see at that time my father was more important than i was
You might have been over looked you might feel un important but you are in important in Gods eyes.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
1 peter
This is what God thinks of you
chosen generation
royal priesthood
Holy nation
peculiar people.
All your life you might have been as Andrew was just the brother of Peter but God
isa 43:1-
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
i know this talks about isreal but we have been crafted into the vine so we can know that what God said about Isreal he can say about us
having said all this we haven’t said what Andrew said or what he did.
On hearing the question from the master he went looking for an answer
Just like he had done so many times before with yes his brother Peter but not in a boat this time he when fishing among the great multitude of people to see what he could rustle up.
Yes once again he looked at the natural for a solution.
They need food lets see what food we’ve got.
His years of fishing had learnt him patience casting out the net and nothing in it when they hurled it in.
Time after time he would ask the question of the people what do you have to eat and time and again his hopes would be dashed as the reply would come back as we have nothing,
Dealing with life’s disappointments can be hard how do i carry on when all around don’t seem to what to help me.
There was nothing wrong with Andrew going around all 5000 men and asking the same question time and time again For he was determined to find an answer for the question that Jesus had possed
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
Andrew was determined to find a natural answer and he continued until he had an individual who was willing to share his lunch.
There may have deen others in that great crowd who had food but weren’t willing to share with the master
Andrew possibly tired out by his asking came to the master and said
There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
John 6:
first we see that all his work had been sucsesful
someone willing to share what they had to help with a great need.
Andrew didn’t know that this would be the catalis to perform one of christ’s wonderful miracles.
Andrew question
but what are they among so many.
but what are they among so many.
Andrew knew that to feed a great number of people you needed a great number of whatever food source there was.
He new this because of the demands upon his life before he came to the master.
two fish only feed two people i need a boat full to feed a large group
past experience should not hinder present requirements.
And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
isa
our weakness are God opportunities.
Andrews going out would bring something in
Andrew knocked on the door and asked many times and we don’t know how many people he asked before he found the lad
But in finding the lad he was faithful to bring min to the master.
Bring what we have found to the master and let him transform it into a miracle.
friends this morning you might find yourselves in the life of Andrew
God as asked you to feed the people but you have gone out into the world to find the food that might feed the people when all the time the food is close at hand.
Maybe you’ve asked the question of the world and haven’t got the answer ask it of him this morning
Maybe you’ve brought a piece of the world to feed the world but without the masters hand this will not happen
friend Jesus is and always will be the answer to the question but we have to have the faith to see it
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
mat
again in l
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
you say Pastor i know that verse and scripture but its not working
let me ask you one thing this morning as i ask myself the same in whom am i abiding
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
john 15
abiding is more than knowing
abiding is having the ability to rest completely in him knowing that he is able and will do for us that which he has promised.
we don’t have to try and solve the problem ourselves we can just trust him do it for us.
Our children know that when the new year starts at school our children know that they need new kit but do they do anything about it know.
They know that out of the bountiful love that there parents have for them mum or dad will sort it.
God is just like this he ask of us a job but he also gives us the tools to do if we come to him.
lets pray.
