Intro: Golf Instructor
When I was in middle school, my best friend had access to a golf cart.
We heard of a golf team and thought we’d join to get to be the Duke’s of Hazard
Read Matthew 26:1-27:50

1. Jesus’ death was a necessary fulfillment of God’s plan
Through our study of the bible this year we have seen how God’s plan builds throughout scripture to fully reveal the Gospel - the good news about God and His plan of redemption.
A. God is the Creator of everything – including humanity
Gen. 1:1
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
And because He is the Creator or everything - including humanity: He is the One who sets the parameters of life
and we all will give an account of our lives to Him
B. Humanity has rebelled against the Creator and deserves eternal punishment
Romans 5:12, 3:23
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
No one is exempt from the brokenness that resulted from the fall of Adam and Eve
Every one of us is placed in the category of sinner
C. Jesus came to give those who are dead in sin, life!
Romans 5:8, 1 John 5 11-12
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
D. We are called to respond in repentance and faith
Repentance means to turn away from our rebellion against God.
It doesn’t mean that we bring an immediate end to our sinning, but that we’ll never again live at peace with our sins - because of it’s severity.
We are also to turn to God in faith.
Faith is reliance. It is a trust in the risen Jesus to save you from your sins.
John 3:17-18
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
The plan of God was both foretold throughout the old testament and by Jesus himself.
All of this:
That the Messiah would come
Would be betrayed
Would suffer
Would die
was all according to the Scriptures that foretold of God’s plan (Gen. 3; Isaiah 7; Isaiah 53; Psalms; Hosea 6; Jonah 1)
The OT portrayed God’s Plan, but Christ did too.
Look with me again at:
2 “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
20 When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve.
21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.
28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Matt 26:31 - is a foretelling of what would come but references back to Zech. 13:7
31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
At one point in v. 51 Peter took a sword and cut off the ear of one of the captors (Malchus)
Jesus responded:
52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”
Through all of this, we know that Jesus’ death was a necessary fulfillment of God’s plan. It was not an accident, or the ultimate result of the Jews hatred. It was God’s plan. Peter wrote in: 1 Peter 1:18-20
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you
The Gospel was not plan B. the plan all along was Jesus…
But before we view the crucifixion in an unbiblical light as cruel or unjust, we must know that:
2. Jesus’ death reveals both the holiness of God and the severity of sin
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
3. Jesus’ death was substitutionary for sinners
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
