Things Jesus Didn’t Come to Do

Introduction:

1). We often think about “Why” Jesus came to earth?

A). We sing the Lord’s Supper Song - “WHY DID MY SAVIOR COME TO EARTH?”

B). He came to seek and save the lost -

C). To deliver us from the dear of death -

D). To have life more abundantly =

2). Today, I want to notice somethings that Jesus didn’t come to do according to the Bible

I.  To Destroy the Law and Prophets ()

A.  “The Law and The Prophets” Is the O.T.

B.   “Destroy” - “destroy, demolish, dismantle”

1). “Abolish” (NASB, ESV, NIV) is probably not the best rendering because it

seemingly creates a conflict with )

2). This word here is used of:

A). Destruction of the Temple by Rome - ;

B). Killing of the Human Body -

C). Overthrowing Christianity -

3). It is used in contrast to the words “To fulfill”

4). This is what Jesus is saying:

a). I didn’t come as an enemy or adversary of the O.T.  My purpose is not to destroy

it but rather to fulfill its purpose.

C.  “To Fulfill”

1). Christ was the “end” of the law -

- NIV - “Christ is the culmination of the law…”

2). The purpose of the law was to bring us to Christ -

3). He fulfilled it all -

II.  To Bring Peace (; )

A.  There is a Sense in Which Jesus Came to Bring Peace

1).  He is the prince of peace -

2). He will bring peace to the nations -

3). He promised the disciples peace - ;

B.  The Context of

1).  Jesus explained what it meant to be a disciple

  A). Disciple is not above his teacher -

  B). They maligned Jesus so they will malign you -

2).  So Don’t fear because man  can’t do anything to you -

3).  The gospel will bring division - He is not saying that Jesus came for the

purpose of being division, but that is the sometimes the result

C.  Jesus Made A Similar Point in

D.  The Gospel Divides People Because of Differing Reactions to It

III.  To Establish an Earthly Kingdom ()

A.  Jesus Came to Be King

1).  When Pilate asked if he was king  (V.37) Jesus answered, “You say

correctly/rightly that I am king”

2).  The sermon on the day of Pentecost was designed to demonstrated

that he was king on his throne -

B.  His Kingdom Was Not Earthly But Spiritual

1). It is entered by a spiritual birth -

2). Worship and lives are spiritual - ;

3). Its mission is spiritual - ;

4). Established and defined by Spiritual means - ;

IV.  To Be Served  ()

A.  The Context of

1).  The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to ask Jesus to give her sons

places of prominence in the kingdom (vv.20-21)

2). The ten were angry over the request - (vv.24)

A). 24. The indignation was that of ‘jealousy not of holy humility’ (Bonnard) – the

ten are no more free of ambition than the two brothers.

B). - they had expressed similar ambition in the past

3). Jesus used this to teach an important lesson about His kingdom

A). Greatest in the kingdom is not found in “lording it over” others

B). Greatest is found in being a servant

B.  Jesus Set An Example of Serving

 V.  To Call the Righteous ()

A.  The Passage Records the Call of Matthew/Levi

1). After the call of Levi, Levi game a big reception/ great feast for Jesus

in his house  -v.29

2). Naturally Levi invited some tax collectors/publicans since they were his

co-workers and likely friends.

3). The Pharisees used this opportunity to grumble or complain about Jesus

receiving these “wicked” people - v.31

4). Jesus pointed out that you don’t go to the doctor unless you are sick -

Jesus did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance

B.  Jesus Came to Call  Sinners to Repentance

1). Jesus is not calling the Pharisees “righteous” - IN fact they were far from it.

A).

B) Later Jesus rebuked them sharply for being “full of greed (robbery, NASB)

and wickedness” -

2). Jesus is saying that even looking through your eyes you should see that

God desires the salvation of these sinners

4). He calls sinners to change / to repent
