Intro

Opening Story/Illustration: Have you ever hired the wrong person to do a job? A few years ago my church was in the midst of constructing a new building and we hired some drywall guys - and they were cheap. Well, they were cheap for a reason. We came in and, I don’t know much about drywall, but even I could tell it was an awful job. So we fired them and found us someone who could do the job right.
When you put the wrong person on the job, it’s frustrating.
You know I could go out and put together a business card that said - “Hilton the Handy-Man - Here for all your construction and household repair needs.” But I’ve got to tell you - you don’t want to hire me. I’m not qualified for the job. There would be frustration on your part because the job wouldn’t get done right and there would be frustration on my part because I couldn’t figure out how to do the job.
Transition to the Text:
This is true in life - when someone promises to come through for us but can’t or doesn’t we get frustrated.
Maybe you’ve had a friend who was supposed to come through for you, but didn’t Maybe you had a bad experience with a doctor who was supposed to be able to fix you, but couldn’t.
Maybe a family member was supposed to take care of something, but hasn’t.
Or maybe you’ve searched your whole life for meaning and significance in all sorts of places but have found none. All these things can leave us feeling alone and broken like we have no one.
Transition to the Text: This morning, I want to look at 3 people who were frustrated. They were dealing with problems and issues that seemed impossible.
I want to look at man this morning who’s life was out of control.
I want to look at a woman who had a disease no one could cure.
I want to look at a little girl who had passed away.
Text: We are going to be in Mark Chapter 5 this morning. Rather than reading the whole thing in one sweep, I want to dive in this morning and we will kind of read it as we go along.
Acts 4:5–12 ESV
5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Transition to Points: I want to talk about this idea this morning - There is No one else.
I want you this morning, if you can, to maybe shift your thinking of God for a moment.
I want you to think of the name “God” not as a name, but as a job description.
All loving
All powerful
All knowing
All good
All Seeing
There is no one who fits that description except God…But many times in our lives, we try to give his job to people and things that are unqualified for the position.
This causes frustration in our lives.
You have a hole, a space in your life, that only God can fill. When you try to put someone or something else in that position, it causes great pain, problems and frustration.
Peter here tell us - There is no one else. There is no one else that can save you and make your life whole. Let’s look at some of the ways Jesus does this.

Points

A Man no one could Free
Mark 5:1–20 ESV
1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea. 14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
This man was demon possessed and the Bible tells us that No one could hold him.
Imagine the disappointment this man went through every day - as he waited hoping for someone - and no one comes through. We feel all alone and abandoned and left out - but Jesus shows up.
He’s has an “unclean” spirit in him. He would have been considered unclean by the Jews here for several reasons:
The demons Inside Him
The fact that he was probably a Gentile (he’s living in Gentile Territory)
He lives among the tombs
I Don’t know his story or how he got to the place where he’s so messed up
But I do know that no one could control him
John 5:1–7 ESV
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.”
He was out of his mind
The Bible tells us he would constantly cry out and cut himself with stones.
He didn’t just have one demon - he had many
The words “I have no one” are some of the saddest in the Bible.
The words “I have no one” are some of the saddest in the Bible. There was no one to help this manHe was alone, broken, and hopeless - He had been paralyzed for 38yrs.He would come to this pool each day and sit around waiting for the water to be stirred - but he had no one to help him get into the waters. I find it interesting that invalid and invalid are the same word/spelling. This man felt invalidated and invalid because of his brokenness - and there was no one there to help him! But Jesus shows up - and when no one else is there for Him, Jesus is! One encounter with Jesus and this man who had no one is healed.
Everyone else just wants to manage or control his problem - but Jesus comes to fix it!
No one else could hold this man - But Jesus sets him free!
There is such a change in this man, that everyone is scared of Jesus.
With just the word of his mouth, Jesus deals with these demons that had been tormenting this man - for days, weeks, maybe years.
There is power in the name of Jesus!
You may be going through something that seems impossible
A situation that has you bound, a habit that clings to you, something that you can’t get rid of.
There was no one to help this manHe was alone, broken, and hopeless - He had been paralyzed for 38yrs.
The Bible says that he that the son has set free is free indeed.
He would come to this pool each day and sit around waiting for the water to be stirred - but he had no one to help him get into the waters.
The Bible tells us that we can walk in victory each day as we submit ourselves to God.
I find it interesting that invalid and invalid are the same word/spelling.
This man felt invalidated and invalid because of his brokenness - and there was no one there to help him!
The Bible shows us over and over and over again that there is no situation that is too difficult for Jesus!
But Jesus shows up - and when no one else is there for Him, Jesus is! One encounter with Jesus and this man who had no one is healed.
You may feel like there is no one who will be there for you. To all who are lonely and depressed - Jesus is a friend and a companion who will lift you up. When we feel like we have no one, Jesus shows up. Sometimes our “loneliness” can be the very thing that draws us closer to Jesus.Jeanne Mayo says - Loneliness becomes your FRIEND when it forces you to draw COMPANIONSHIP from God that you would otherwise like to draw from another human being. When we feel like we have no-one, Jesus is there for us! Too many of us have spent our lives relying on people to meet a need that only Jesus can meet! We want our spouse, our boyfriend or our girlfriend, our friends, or kids - to meet a need that only Jesus can meet. Many of us have gone through disappointment after disappointment with people and we’ve come to the end of our rope with it. Imagine the disappointment this man went through every day - as he waited hoping for someone - and no one comes through. We feel all alone and abandoned and left out - but Jesus shows up. I find that it is in those moments when I am going through something and I feel as though I have no one else, Jesus is present and he is all I really needed! No one was there for this lame man at the pool - No one, But Jesus.
Who you know that seems to far gone?
Illustration - In 1976 a man named David Berkowitz began a shooting spree through New York City. He would shoot and kill people and then leave letters for the police promising more killings. By 1977 he had killed 6 victims and wounded 7 others. After he was finally caught, he claimed that his neighbors dog had commanded him to kill people. He was sentenced to life in prison. 10 years into his prison sentence God miraculously saved this man! A man comes to prison and visits him and gives him a pocket Bible. David begins to read the Psalms and God begins to work in his heart!
Who do you know that seems to be hopelessly lost?
You may feel like there is no one who will be there for you.
No one can save, but Jesus!
No One could free this man - No one, But Jesus!
To all who are lonely and depressed - Jesus is a friend and a companion who will lift you up.
When we feel like we have no one, Jesus shows up.
Sometimes our “loneliness” can be the very thing that draws us closer to Jesus.

No one Could Heal
A Lady No one Could Cure
Mark 5:21–34 ESV
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Here we have another case of someone who would have been considered “unclean.”
She’s an outcast because for the last 12yrs she’s been bleeding.
She had suffered for twelve years
I imagine that all her trips to the doctors began to get tiring
She would come home with the same story
When you come from a dr. visit, everyone wants to know how it went.
For twelve years, every time she comes back from the dr., she hangs her head in despair and says, “They can’t figure out my problem. They want to try a different approach.”
Eventually she exhausts all her means trying to get better - and she keeps getting worse.
She’s tired, she’s broken, and she is over it and she’s probably going to die soon.
But she heard about Jesus - and something in her began to hope again
She thinks to herself - If I can just get close to him.
If I can just touch the hem of his garment.
One encounter with Jesus does what twelve years, her lifetime savings, and all the best doctors could not do.
You may be suffering from something that no one has been able to heal you from To all who are sick and discouraged Jesus is the great physician. When we feel like there is no medicine to take and no doctor to help us, Jesus shows up. Illustration - I was reminded of God’s healing power this last week as I looked at a friend’s Facebook wall. Two years ago their son woke up with stomach pains and they took him the ER. After testing him they found a mass and told his parents that he had lymphoma. The doctors sent him to a Children’s hospital for further testing and set up a meeting between the parents and the Doctors at St. Jude hospital - a hospital that takes care of children with cancer. They sent out the word to pray - and by the time they got to the children’s hospital and began doing more scans, they couldn’t find anything wrong with him! Many of you in this room have similar stories of how God healed you - when no one else could do anything about it - Jesus comes through! Some of you are waiting on your healingKeep praying, keep believing, keep trusting! God is at work! No One could heal this woman of her sickness - No one, But Jesus!
The idea here in the original language (in verse 29) is that her problem stopped - Stopped completely. It was done, finished.
What Doctors could not do in 12 years time, Jesus was done with, finished with - In an instant!
You may be suffering from something that no one has been able to cure
To all who are sick and discouraged Jesus is the great physician.
When we feel like there is no medicine to take and no doctor to help us, Jesus shows up.

Mark 5:35–43 ESV
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
This synagogue ruler Comes to Jesus with a request that he come heal his sick little girl.
Interesting to note - The little girl is 12, the women we just discussed bled for 12 years.
The child is at the point of death - Much like the woman.
While Jesus is on the way to heal the little girl, this incident with the woman occurs. Notice that Jesus isn’t in a hurry. He always has time to stop and deal with the needs of those around him.
Somewhere, during his journey to reach the little girl, she passes away.
The servant of Jarius shows up and says, “Listen, don’t trouble the teacher any longer.” Translation: She’s dead, it’s over. done. No hope. People don’t resurrect.
But Jesus says to them, “Don’t fear, just believe.”
Jesus goes to the girl and He takes her by the hand - This would have made Jesus unclean. Notice a pattern here:
He takes her by the hand - This would have made Jesus unclean.
Jesus deals with the unclean demoniac man
Notice a pattern here - He deals with the de
Jesus deals with this unclean woman who’s been bleeding for 12 years.
Jesus deals with the unclean dead body of this little girl.
Jesus is willing to touch things and people that no one else will touch!
Jesus touches the little girl and she get up.
Notice again Mark’s use of the word “immediately.”
Immediately the lady’s blood flow stopped
Immediately, the little girl gets up.
Jesus is able to do things “immediately.”
There are some scholars that argue here that Jesus’ statement that the girl was asleep means that she was in a coma.
OK - If we go with that though, this is still an incredible miracle! Who else do you know who talks to people in comas and says - “Get Up!” and the immediately get up?!
Bottom line - Jesus resurrects what is dead.
Jesus can do the impossible!
I don’t know your situation, but I know If Jesus can raise the dead, there’s nothing too difficult for him!
You may have been dealing with your situation for years, but if Jesus can heal a lady who’d been dealing with her situation for 12yrs, he can work in your situation.
You may feel like thing are out of control - But if Jesus can set a demon possessed man free, He work in your life.

Conclusion

Restatement of the MI - Jesus can do what no one else can do!
You may have a sickness in your body
YOu may
You may have a habit in your life
You may have death looming - either figuratively or literally - But Jesus can show up
Now What?
This morning I want to offer salvation to those of you in this room. Jesus is the only one who can make your life whole.
Maybe you’re frustrated because you’re trying to give God’s job to other things or people in your life.
Today’s the day to give Jesus his rightful play in your life - Savior and LORD.
