Psalm 23:1–6 CSB
The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.

I. JB has all he needs today.

Psalm 23:1–2 CSB
The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters.

JB knew what it was to lack, God always provided.

Psalm 23:1–2 CSB
The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters.
Illus: JB grew up poor. When he was 4 he lost his mom, and in large part he grew up working in the fields often keeping watch of his sister who was an infant.
God was watching over JB. God did not let him starve, but instead walked with him through the brokenness of life.
As JB grew older, he joined the navy. There came a moment when JB had to quit to care for his Dad. This decision could have cost him, but God walked with him through the brokenness of life.
While at home, he recieved a job working for international paper. God walked with him through the brokenness of life.
Illus:Philippians 4:12–13 (CSB)
12 I know both how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.

II. Jesus was with JB as he walked through broken seasons.

Psalm 23:3–4 CSB
He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

When JB trusted Jesus, he was ready to get his life right, even if it cost him everything.

Psalm 23:3–4 CSB
He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.
Illus: The defining moment of JB’s life was when he came to trust Jesus. Jesus was more than just the forgiver of JB’s sins, he also became the boss and guide of His life.
At that time JB was working at International paper. After trusting Jesus, JB was convicted because he has stolen tools, as was the practice of many of the employees.
The day after trusting Jesus JB walked into his bosses office, expecting to be fired. He knew he needed to confess to his sin and get things right. He brought his stolen tools in and confessed everything.
God walked with JB through this time.
In fact, because of the change in JB’s life, he went on to be a safety inspector earning an education and career.
JB was willing to throw everyting away, God was watching over him.
Illus:Philippians 3:7–8 (CSB)
7 But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ

The most difficult season of JB’s life was when he lost his wife.

Psalm 23:3–4 CSB
He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.
Illus: I met JB after his wife had passed. JB had just had a heart procedure and he was the first person I visited at home in our church.
Funny thing was, when we talked, he did not want to talk about his story, about his heart, or about his pain, he wanted to talk about his wife.
After losing his wife, JB wrote this poem....
Illus:Revelation 21:4 (CSB)
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.

III. Today JB dwells in the House of the Lord.

Psalm 23:5–6 CSB
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.
Illus: For us on this side of eternity death hurts. OUr hearts break as we say goodbye.
Today is is joyful day for JB. He is in the presence of Jesus, united with his wife, without pain, heartache or any problems.
Today we look forward in hope. The hope that led a man to confess of stealing tools, the hope of a God who provides, the hope of eternity.
To have this hope you must place your faith in Christ. Faith that Jesus died for your sins, and faith that he is boss of your life.
We look forward to what is good, perfect and that JB experiences today.
1 Corinthians 2:9 CSB
But as it is written, What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived— God has prepared these things for those who love him.
