Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need;
The book of Philippians is the only place that speaks of Epaphroditus.
a. He was from Philippi, a member of the church. He had been sent by the church to bring gifts to Paul. And it seems that he was told to stay with Paul and help with what ever was needed.
Philippians
But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
b. He became sick, almost to the point of death.. But God spared his life, and gave him his health back.
c. Paul would send him back, with this letter. Paul could have used him there, but it was more important to send him back, then to deal with Paul’s persona needs.
“My brother and companion in labour”
d. Paul commends Epipie for his zeal, faithfulness, and his unselfishness in serving Jesus.
e. He calls him “my brother” He was willing to do whatever it took in serving the Lord, and serving Paul.
“And fellow solder”
f. The bible calls us a believers “solders” Elab on battle, warfare.
“messenger”
g. Eppie had made the trip to Rome bring gifts and message from the church. He had also brought great joy to Paul.
“And he that ministered to my wants” “needs”
“A minister to my needs”
For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick.
Philippians 2:
Eppie loved the Philippian believers and longed to be with them.
“Full of heaviness” worn out and overpowered with grief, because that ye have heard that he was sick”
b. He was homesick? He was sick, and the had gotten word of it.
For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.
God has mercy on Eppie.
a. But he was also merciful on Paul. If he would have dead it would have caused Paul much sorrow.
b. If he would have died Paul may have felt a bit responsible.
c.
28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
Philippians
28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you.
29 Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard;
Philippians 2:
To know that Eppie was home and safe would lesson the sadness of Paul’s heart.
a. And the believers at the Philippian church would be worried about him anymore. They would see him restored because of Gods mercy.
b. He would return to them with a letter from Paul.
VS 29 “Receive him with gladness. (With joy)
“hold such in reputation”
NASB “hold men like him in great regard”
a. We should give honor where honor is due. Respect unto whom respect is due.
b. But especially should we honor whose who are faithful in the work of the Lord.
c. Eppie is someone who is only mentioned here in Philippians. He’s not know as a hero in the faith, but what he did was big.
30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me.
He came close to death, risking his own life.
a. He exposed himself to danger, regardless of the cost, even it meant death.
b. He saw doing God’s work as more important then his own life. He was willing to give his very best to the Lord, for his church and for Paul.
“to supply your lack of toward service me”
NASB “what was deficient in your service to me”
He was not implying that they had wilfully neglected him his needs and necessities of life.
a. He was not blaming them for lack of service, but they had simply had not the opportunity to minister to his needs.
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
Philippians
b. Eppie came to bring supplies to Paul, but also to encourage him.
c. What do we need to do to encourage others?
