“Be careful for nothing”
Translates “anxious” Be anxious for nothing.
a. Don’t worry, don’t feel uneasy.
b. Jesus spoke of this.
Matthew
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
c. A big part of our life, big part of our prayer life, is to not be preoccupied with worry.
d. We don’t have to worry because God is concerned with every part of the life of His children.
e. When we obey Him, He will not hold back any good from us.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
f. LOOK AT FIRST PART OF VS
G. Word dwelleth “Abides”
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
JPH
“If you abide in Me.” To abide means to remain, dwell, or continue, and according to , abiding in Christ is characterized by keeping His commands.
a. Therefore, if we want to pray effectively, we must be committed to obey God in every area of our life.
b. Any rebellion robs us of the wisdom we need in order to pray rightly.
c. It also hinders our fellowship with the Father and keeps Him from hearing and answering our requests.
“And [If] My words abide in you.” We must ask ourselves these questions: Does God’s Word remain, dwell, and continue in me?
a. Am I more preoccupied with talking to God in prayer than with listening to what He’s said in His Word?
b. Scripture is the basis for effective prayer. As we read and meditate upon God’s Word, it convicts us of sin so we can repent and be cleansed.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
c. Scripture adjusts our focus from earthly priorities to heavenly ones.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew
d. It also shapes our thoughts to align with God’s will so we’ll know how to pray according to His will instead of ours.
It also shapes our thoughts to align with God’s so we’ll know how to pray according to His will instead of ours.
“But everything by prayer and supplication”
Supplication: Here it is speaking of prayer that is concerning a peculiar need that comes up; it indicates a deep burden. (Have ever had a burden? Have one now?)
e. Sometimes we pray without without being particularly burdened about a specific thing. We just pray, and we need to do so.
f.
f. But there are times when there is a great burden on our hearts. So burdens you have trouble sleeping, or just trouble working and thinking right.
e. Then we pray with supplication (deep concern) we make our request make unto God.
f. Praying for a person (family, friend, situation, church, etc…) whatever the burden is.
g. Burden for our church to grow. Burden for Sunday school teachers.
“with thanksgiving”
Prayer should always be with thanksgiving”
a. Whatever happens, whatever burden you are carrying, we can always find something to be thankful for, something to praise God for.
Paul told the church at Thessalonica this.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
I Thessalonians
b. It is God’s will for us to be thankful. Every prayer, regardless of the burden needs to be with thanksgiving.
“Let your request be known unto God”
c. Supplication is praying for something particular.
d. Request is prayer in detail.
e. Sunday morning: Pray for me, pray for Pine Grove, pray for the services.
f. But do in detail. For your pastor.
g. Pray for the services.
h. Pray for the music.
i. Pray for the giving.
j. This is the same praying for others. There people I pray for, and in detail.
k. Praying for yourself. “not just Lord bless me today” ask for details.
l. Pray for yourself in detail. (Car)
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
James 4
3. Prayer is the key that unlocks the storehouse of God’s supplies.
a. Whatever we need, God has; and whatever we will use to His glory, He will supply.
b. It is God’s joy to give good things to those who love Him, trust Him, and allow Jesus to be Lord of their lives.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians
“And the peace of God, which passeth (surpasses) all understanding, (comprehension)
a. We talked about being anxious, which causes us to have anxiety, and with that there is no peace.
b. Paul is pointing out here that God gives us peace that removes anxiety.
c.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
c. Why is it important to have this peace to have an effective prayer life? If you have no peace, it makes it hard to pray.
2. The world will tells us we can have peace through other ways. Money will not bring you real peace. Only God can do that.
a. God gives a peace that passeth all understanding.
b. God gives us a peace goes beyond anything the mind can imagine or conceive.
“shall keep (guards) your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ”
c. God’s peace guards our minds. Gimto Cuba. 1983, 1984. Fence line, US land and communist Cuba.
8 foot fence, land minds, Marine guards with loaded M-60 machine guns.
d. The peace of God guards our minds like well-garrisoned stronghold.
e. The devil attacks our minds, doesn’t want us to have peace, wants us to worry and keep us from praying.
f. God’s peace will guard our minds, and this comes through Jesus Christ.
“Shall keep our hearts and minds, through Jesus Christ”
g. We have to do our part, and that is trust and obey.
h. Through that trust and obey, Jesus keeps that peace.
