Intro:

Idolatry definition:
• Idolatry is worshipping anything that ought to be used, or using anything that ought to be worshipped. - Augustine
Corinth background: it seems that some were actually attending pagan festivals, presumably to eat. They had taken their rights to this point, pridefully.

Check yourself because…Idolatry is dangerous.

In the last couple chapters, he has mentioned how we ought to be careful not to cause others to stumble. Now he is offering a warning about you stumbling.
Describe verses 1-3- “baptized into Moses” “the rock is Christ” Even though they all were part of the “group,” some of them perished in Judgement.
It is dangerous, even for those who claim Christ. Overconfidence and Presumption may cause us to have a false sense of security. But judgment awaits those who give themselves over to idolatry. And even for the legitimate child of God, discipline awaits. (summarize verses 1-5, 11.) There are similar warning passages in hebrews.

Paul cites this passage because it is a prime example of idolatry but he cites the “festival” aspect as well to remind them that they are too close. The judgement in was that 3000 people were killed by the sword because of their sin and the LORD also sent a plague on the camp.

We will often desire evil and then worship Gods that justify or condone our chosen lifestyle. We choose a God that suits us.

Pride and ingratitute manifest itself in complaining. When you complain you have forgotten your blessings from God, you are ungrateful and susceptible to look to other gods.
