Love is the key to it all.
We know true love when we know God.

what does Gods love produce in You?
1. God’s love produces an open and public confession.

15-16)
“Whoever” - Anyone.
No matter where they are from.
John speaks of a special confession.
Not a future or a present continuing confession.
A single and decisive public confession.
A moment when the Sprit of God convicts you to confess Jesus Christ as Your Lord and Savior.
The main point of John’s letter: A person who is truly a Christian and the Christian community will claim Jesus as the Son of God.
They will demonstrate His love toward others.
This is for everyone.
“Know and believe” - A faith of knowledge and experience.
Being moved to this belief because of past experiences.
It is one thing to know and believe the love God has for us; it is another to ‘live in love’ ourselves.

2. God’s love produces confidence.

17-18)
When believers reflect God’s loving character in their lives, God’s love is made perfect.
It’s like finding safety under a covering during a rainstorm.
Believers learn to rest in God’s love and in turn His love rests in believers.

The day is called the great day of their wrath.
“Confidence” - Parresia - Un-shrinking confidence we will have at the coming of Christ and the assurance we have every time we pray to Him.
Confidence is the opposite of fear.
“No fear in love” Lit., fear is not.
It has no existence.
Fear by anticipating punishment.
Fear carries its own punishment.
People love to punish themselves.
Fear is what first occupies your mind but it will not remain there.
You don’t need to allow slavish fear to occupy you.
Let love be introduces and replace fear.
Let love banish fear away.
Fear and love might as well be water and oil.
They don’t mix.

God first loved us in sending His own son.
Our greatest characteristic is not hat we fear but that we love.
All human love is preceded and generated by the love of God.
3. God’s love produces Christlike behavior.
(V.
20-21)
John writes that is is impossible to love God without also demonstrating love to other believers.
It is harder to love what we can’t see than what is seen.
If we can’t do what’s easier, how can we expect to do what’s harder?
Perfect love drives out fear as well as hatred.
What is Christ-like behavior?

These are what prove the truth of our claim to now, possess, and love God.
Verse 21 says that the responsibility to show Christ-like sacrificial love to other Christians is not optional.
The love for God and love for our brother is one single command
