Jesus Christ
Who is Jesus Christ? What does this mean to you?
The anointed one, sent to redeem the world.
Son of God, savior of the world
Why are the old testament prophets of Isaiah () and Malachi () quoted at the beginning of the Gospel of Mark?
Let’s us know that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy concerning the LORD God’s plan of salvation for His people
references the “LORD.” What does LORD mean in the Old Testament? What does LORD mean in the New Testament?
OT = God
NT = Jesus
So Jesus is God hence the son of God
Who is the voice crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the LORD?”

crying- of one calling
Who prepares the way of the LORD?
Proclaim (preach) means to announce in a formal or official manner by means of a herald or one who functions as a herald.
One who is sent by the LORD (GOD). God’s messenger.
How does one prepare the way of the LORD?
Appear baptizing
appear (came, was there, arrive, became)- a marker of new information, either concerning participants in an episode or concerning the episode itself
Proca
Baptizing- to employ water in a religious ceremony designed to symbolize purification and initiation on the basis of repentance
Baptism is an initiation, a beginning, not the end goal. Baptism is only a symbol of purification. So how are we actually purified?
Ephesians 5:26 ESV

Ephesians 5:26
Revelation 12:11 ESV
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Where was John baptizing? Why?
Baptizing in the wilderness
wilderness- being in a state of isolation, abandonment, land that is basically wild, non-arable, and sparsely inhabited or unfit for permanent settlement
What was John proclaiming?
Proclaim (preach) means to announce in a formal or official manner by means of a herald or one who functions as a herald.
a baptism of repentance
What does repentance mean?
repentance- change of mind, change one’s way of life as the result of a complete change of thought and attitude with regard to sin and righteousness i.e. seek to sin no more and know that Jesus makes us righteous
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans
1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV
“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
For the forgiveness of sins
What does forgiveness mean?
forgiveness- the act of freeing and liberating from something that confines, release
forgiveness- to remove the guilt resulting from wrongdoing, to pardon, to forgive

the moral consequence of having sinned, guilt

Who were going out to John and being baptized, confessing their sins?
Why was John dressed the way he dressed? The prophets of the old testament called the people to repentance.
2 Kings 1:8 ESV
They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
John 1:19–23 ESV
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
What else did John proclaim (preach)?
After me comes he who is mightier- Jesus is greater
the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie- Jesus really greater
I have baptized you with water- the beginning
But he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit- more work to be done

Testing The King ()

John 4:23–24 ESV
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
What is John’s perspective of the importance of his work in comparison to the work of Jesus Christ?
So what is the purpose of preaching (proclaiming) the WORD of God?
