Birthdays are interesting things. Some people look forward to them, excited to celebrate with a day full of family, friends, cards, presents, parties, and cake. Many young people, two weeks after their 12th birthday, are already describing themselves as “going on 13,” looking forward to being a “real teenager” and getting a chance to join the youth group.

Other people dread birthdays and let the day slip by with little notice or fanfare. Maybe they have no friends or family to celebrate with them. Maybe birthdays are a sad reminder of better times. Maybe they fear to grow old or to be perceived as old.

But whether you look forward to your birthdays with anticipation or with dread, they will keep coming, once a year for the rest of your life. I realized this as a small child. You know, children have obligations and tasks they must fulfil. For example, all children must have a favourite colour and a favourite number. This is an important prerequisite for kindergarten. Now, I know that I was an odd child, but I took this very seriously. I can remember thinking that I should not pick 5 as my favourite number because I would not be five years old forever. But every year for the rest of my life, I would have a birthday on the 4th day of June. And so, 4 was the chosen number.
