The Hatful

Intro
Last week we learned from Jesus all about Love, the fathers love, Jesus love and the disciples and church love
This week we learn all about hate. Quite the contrast!
Hate like love is an overused word
Hate like love is an overused word
I hate when I'm running on the treadmill for half an hour and look down to see it's been 4 minutes.
Why do mother kangaroos hate rainy days? Because their kids have to play inside!
I hate peer pressure and you should too.
I know that there are people who don't love their fellow man – I hate those people.
By age 35 you should hate the last three albums by your favorite band.
What is biblical hate?
Hate derives from a strong dislike or ill will toward persons or things. As an emotional attitude, a person may oppose, detest, or despise contact with a thing or a person. Love and hatred often stand opposed
Implications of this text.
More than that I feel like this text is all the reasons why we shouldn't evangelize
More than that I feel like this text is all the reasons why we shouldn't evangelize
John 15:18-
And probably the reason many of us dont.
Jesus doesn't accept that understanding of this text however and even though he lists all the reasons that we might want to avoid sharing the gospel he instead tells us be witnesses.
This is a strange text and has serious cultural implications that we need to consider as believers and followers of Jesus Christ.
John 15:16-
John 15:16–18 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
Intro Story
John 15:18–21 ESV
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
John 15:19–20 ESV
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
John 15:19-
Hated Jesus first,
Hates us because of Jesus
You aren't better than Jesus if they hated him they will hate you
They dont know the father, they hate jesus and they will hate us.
Great…
John 15:22 ESV
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
John 15:21–22 ESV
But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
John 15:21-
This verse is confusing to some at first glance.
John15:
He is not speaking of sin in general but of sin in specific which is hating jesus and putting him to death.
John 15:23–25 ESV
Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
Jesus has told the disciples clearly that he and the father are one. And they have seen the father because they have seen Jesus. Because Jesus is one in character and essence with the father.
John 15:23-
John 15:23–24 ESV
Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
John 15:23-
John 15:26–27 ESV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.
John 15:23–24 ESV
Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
But… sometimes a good thing sometimes not.
John 15:26-
Helper? oh yeah that sounds good
This is helper is of truth and from the father and from the son because jesus will send him.
What does the helper come to do?
bear witness about Jesus
And we will also bear witness
Ok Jesus what is going on here?
Why are you telling us all this?
Hate? that we will be hated and rejected because we follow you.
I guess the Helper part sounds good. But why does the world have to hate us and why are you telling us this?
Helper help us emerse not escape the hate
John 16:1–4 ESV
“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
John 16:1-
So that you wont fall away.
Jesus try to make it sound better than it is
He is giving us a needed reality check
Why?
Because it can get really really bad. And he is letting us know up front.
Christians are the most persecuted people group in the world
2 reasons the world hates the church
They are depraved, the more depraved they are in nature the more they hate the church and christians
They have been abused by the church or seen large amounts of hypocrisy.

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ

1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV

1 Peter 1:6-
1 Peter 4:12–16 ESV
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

Did you guys see the benefit of their hate? The benefit of our trials?
They have been abused by the church or seen large amounts of hypocrisy.

Hate doesn't win the glory of Jesus wins
John 15:25 ESV
But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’
Ater our perception from natural to supernatural

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
