When You Choose Maintenance Mode over God’s Mission

Luke 9:51 AMP
51 Now when the time was almost come for Jesus to be received up [to heaven], He steadfastly and determinedly set His face to go to Jerusalem.
In The beginning of chapter 9 Jesus calls the 12 He gave them power and authority to drive out demons and cure diseases
And sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God

When I Choose Comfort instead of My Personal Cross

Luke 9:57 ESV
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
Luke 9:58 ESV
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
He had a “ What’s in it For Me “ type Spirit
More than a year earlier, Jesus had said the same thing to a scribe who offered to follow Him across the lake (). Probably he had given that same answer many times to those who were looking for a kind of preferment that He did not have to offer.
9:57–58. A man approached and wanted to follow where they were going. Jesus’ response was that a person desiring to follow Him must give up what others consider necessities.
Jesus had no home of His own nor did His followers. They were on their way to Jerusalem where Jesus would be put to death.
Jesus’ reply to the second and third men
Jesus’ reply to the second and third men does not, of course, mean that we should ignore our day-to-day responsibilities toward people. The Bible teaches over and over that one of the truest marks of a Christian is to be thoughtful and considerate in all family relationships, especially in times of grief. It is likely that if the man’s father had already died, the man would have been busy with burial preparations. Instead, Jesus knew that the man was suggesting that he would like to go home and care for his father until his death—to put off serving Jesus until there was a more convenient time in his busy life. Jesus means that sharing the Word of God with others is of infinitely greater importance than all our worldly responsibilities, and in case of conflict between the two, there should not be a moment’s hesitation—God first always.
Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Jeremiah 17:10 ESV
10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
John 2:25 ESV
25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
Luke 9:23 ESV
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Luke 9:24 ESV
24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Luke
God does not comfort us to make us comfortable but to make us comforters.
God does not comfort us to make us comfortable but to make us comforters.
—John Henry Jewett
Luke 9:58 ESV
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

When I Choose my Convince over His Convictions

Luke 9:59 ESV
59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
Luke 9:60 ESV
60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
This does not, of course, mean that we should ignore our day-to-day responsibilities toward people.

His request was to let him wait just a little while before following Jesus. Perhaps the man also wanted to receive the inheritance from his father’s estate.
