Proverbs for Wisdom
Proverbs for Wisdom
Reason for proverbs is for wisdom. Wisdom so we are prepared and equipped for this life both physical and spiritual. Tonight we are looking at the voice of wisdom.
(insert slide: Listen up; already saved on computer)
To hear wisdom’s voice we need to listen
To hear wisdom calls for us to apply wisdom too
Be careful what you listen too for folly has a voice too.
Is listening more than hearing?
Wisdom’s Voice
Wisdom’s Voice
Wisdom has a voice and it comes in form of instruction, in teaching, but we need to be careful for follow will try to lead you away from wisdom.
Wisdom’s voice is voice of instruction (Pro1:8-10; Pro22:6; Tit2:1-10)
8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; 9 Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.
What does wisdom sound like (v.8)?
What does it look like (v.9)?
What is the application (v.10)?
Wisdom instructs and teaches the child (Pro22:6) .
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Does this mean that wisdom prevents someone from departing or straying from the ways of the Lord?
You see what wisdom, the instructions, the teaching, what it looks like in (v.9) now what Paul has to say about it, look at Tit2:1-10
Wisdom can be seen (Tit2:1-10)
(Have everyone turn in bibles to Tit2:1-10)
1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. 6 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;
7 in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
9 Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.
In looking at the passage in Tit2:1-10 what does wisdom look like?
The voice of temptation can be seen too (Pro1:11-14; Pro3:14-16)
11 If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us ambush the innocent without cause; 12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, as those who go down to the pit;
The voice of temptation can be seen too (Pro1:11-14)
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with spoil; 14 Throw in your lot with us, We shall all have one purse,”
Temptation is all around and it calls to us, just as wisdom does. We need to be careful what we are listening to.
Temptation is not a friend, for a friend would not lead you into sin.
Don’t reject the eternal treasures of true wisdom
14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver And her gain better than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than jewels; And nothing you desire compares with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.
Wisdom’s instructions regarding temptation (Pro1:15-19); 2Cor6:14-18; Jam1:14)
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path, 16 For their feet run to evil And they hasten to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net In the sight of any bird; 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; It takes away the life of its possessors.
Pro
Be careful where you walk, who you walk with, check out 2Cor6:14-18)
14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. “And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you.
18 “And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.
2COr
Don’t play with temptation for it always lays in wait, it is a trap (Pro1:17) or you could look at Jam1:14)
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
Don’t do harm to others for in doing such you are only harming yourself in the long run (Pro1:18-19)
Wisdom’s voice of Salvation
Wisdom’s voice of Salvation
So wisdom has a voice, and now may we look at how wisdom speaks, where wisdom speaks and to who wisdom speaks to, as well as what does wisdom have to say, and what should we do with it.
Wisdom speaks loudly!
(Insert picture: wisdom speaks loudly already saved on computer)
Wisdom speaks through words (Rom10:18)
18 But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.”
Wisdom speaks through creation (Psm19:1-4)
1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun,
Wisdom speaks through instinct (Rom2:14-16)
14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,
16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.
Though the Gentiles did not have the law they still knew the things of the law.
Our job, our aim, our task is to boldly proclaim salvation's message in an uncompromising way.
Where does wisdom speak (Pro1:20-21)
20 Wisdom shouts in the street, She lifts her voice in the square; 21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out; At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
Wisdom speaks on the streets, in the square, noisy places, in city gates
So, for the most part it is done outside of the church building.
Wherever people are, that is where wisdom needs to speak.
Who does wisdom speak to (Pro1:22-24)
22 “How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate knowledge? 23 “Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.
24 “Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
Simple ones, scorners and the fools
The simple will believe anything
The scorners think they know everything
The fools are ignorant because they are dull and stubborn
What does wisdom say (Pro1:22-23)?
Brings the charge, brings the indictment (Pro1:22)
Brings an invitation (Pro1:23)
Wisdom is calling with a promise to bring a change through the Word.
What about the response to wisdom (Pro1:24-25)?
The simple, the scorner and the fool will reject wisdom (v.24)
They neglect all counsel (v.25)
Judgment and calamity is coming and they have been warned (v.26)
What is the reason for wisdom again? So we are prepared and equipped for this life both physical and spiritual; not accepting wisdom has consequences because:
Wisdom is to protect against coming judgment
Wisdom is to protect against coming judgment
Wisdom comes with instructions for application, you cannot have the benefits of wisdom if you do apply wisdom.
26 I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, 27 When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but they will not find me, 29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord.
30 “They would not accept my counsel, They spurned all my reproof. 31 “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way And be satiated with their own devices.
32 “For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
Pro1:30-
For when calamity comes and they cry out, He will not answer (v.28)
For when calamity comes and they cry out, He will not answer (v.28)
calamity comes, dread comes, distress and anguish come, they will cry out, cry to the Lord, he will not answer.
It will be the death to them (v.32)
Look at (v.32) again, waywardness will kill then, complacency will destroy them.
A New Testament warning about this (2Tim4:3-4)
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
We need to seek wisdom while it can be found (Isa55:6)
We need to seek wisdom while it can be found (Isa55:6)
6 Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
A Healthy Response to Wisdom’s voice
A Healthy Response to Wisdom’s voice
All in! Wisdom speaks, speaks up, speaks out, call us to be all in. Do you have a healthy response to wisdom’s voice?
33 “But he who listens to me shall live securely And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”
Listen and apply
Listen and apply and live securely (in your salvation)
Listen apply, live securely and have peace from the dread of evil for you know where you rest is, in Christ Jesus, who is your peace.
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
