Victory!
Victory!
Who doesn’t love a good victory? Our passage today shows victory over disease and victory over death all by the touches of the Savior.
We have seen victory over demons (Mk1:23-28, 34)
We have seen victory over sickness (Mk1:29-31, 34, 40-45, 2:1-12, etc.)
We have seen victory over nature (MK4:35-41)
When it comes to victory and Jesus what do you think of?
Our journey today, with the Gospel focus being on the works of Jesus vs. the words of Jesus shows us Jesus power, Jesus victory demonstrated over
Disease, healing the woman with blood issue (Mk5:25-34)
Death, in the raising of Jairus daughter (Mk5:21-24, 35-43)
A moment to look at a simple contrast (Mk5:21)
21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.
Jesus had crossed over to the other side from the area of the Gadarenes to Capernaum.
One crowd wanted Him to leave; the other waited for Him to get there and surrounded Him.
One had seen the miracles and demanded He leave; one wanted a miracle and wanted Him to stay.
The touches of the Savior to the needy do not care about someone who is important or someone who is a nobody.
You will notice that both Jairus and the poor woman both found the answers to their needs at the feet of Jesus (Mk5:22, 33)
(explain about a Markum sandwich for that is what this is, a story with another in the middle)
I. Touch of a woman
I. Touch of a woman
In the middle of the crowd, in the middle of a time Jesus is going to help someone we get this story of a woman who was at wits end and was willing to do anything. This is a story of both physical and spiritual healing.
25 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse—
27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.”
Mk5:
29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?”
31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
MK5:31-
What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?
What can we know, about the woman (v.25-26)?
She had suffered, endured much
This issue had been for 12 years
She endured much at the hands of physicians
She spent all she had to only become worse

She came to touch Jesus (Mk5:27-29)
What can you learn from these verses
She heard about Jesus; came to touch His garment
After being unclean for 12 years (according to law, Lev15:19ff), having spent all she had on doctors, she is broke and desperate and hears about Jesus this miracle worker and comes to Him with a measure of faith.
She believed
She did not let anything stand in her way, not the law, not the crowd, not her own history. We do not know how much faith she had since Jesus was her last resort having tried everything else, but we know she had faith.
Jesus rewards faith, and she was healed because of her faith.
She was healed
She needed more than physical healing didn’t she? look at (v.34) in another version
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
MK5:34
34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
or even in the Christian Standard Bible
"Daughter," he said to her, "your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction."
Faith saves, faith makes you whole, more than just the physical healing, she needed the spiritual too.
Jesus dealt with her publically
He did it for her, to be more than a miracle worker for her, but Savior!
He did it for Jairus sake, he needed encouragement, because of what message just came to him along the way
He did it so she may be an example, a testimony to others (Psm107:2, 20-21)
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary
20 He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. 21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
She touched Him, and in turn He touched her too, now that brings me to
Are we willing to touch Jesus?
We have already seen those afraid of Jesus (Mk5:15-17)
Are we like them, afraid? Do we know people like that?
Are we willing to approach Jesus regardless of the obstacles?
She was willing to go to any length, are we?
While we may not be able to physically touch Jesus but we can put Him on in baptism (Gal3:27)
Be united with Him through baptism (Rom6:3-4)
Have our sins washed away (Act22:16; Rev1:5)
If we are willing to touch Jesus He is willing to touch us!
If we have enough faith to obey His word, His commands we can be forgiven, we can be blessed and we can share that blessing with others. Remember how she came to Jesus
27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.
Mk5
While Jesus is still speaking word comes from the house of Jairus.
II. Touch of a child
II. Touch of a child
A humble man, in a humble state needing the touch of Jesus on His child. In this case it is the words of Jesus that made all the difference. The word of faith, the word of hope, and the word of love and power giving victory over death.
21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. 22 One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet
23 and implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.” 24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
Mk5:21
What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?
It would not have been easy for Jairus to come to Jesus, remember he is leader of the synagogue. The religious leaders surely would not approve, they were looking to destroy Jesus.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, Jairus was willing to do it if it could save his daughter. He would rather lose friends, lose status, lose position, just not lose his daughter.
As mentioned a moment ago, in this story it is the words of Jesus that are the focus.
But a quick overview of this passage is in order first.
The word of faith (v
While on the way, word comes to Jesus the daughter is dead (vv. 35-37)
Jesus only permitted James, John and Peter to accompany Him
He assured Jairus that what he just heard was not the end, only believe!
To a houseful of mourners (vv.38-40)
People wailing and weeping
Jesus rebukes, and affirms not dead, but is asleep
Results in ridicule of Jesus; Jesus empties the house except for parents and his three apostles with Him
Jesus raised the child and gave a command (Mk5:41-43)
Jesus touched her
Jesus commanded her
Jesus commanded her parents
But was the girl really did, has been a question raised by some?
Jesus own words said she was not dead, but asleep, so what was it? Was she dead or asleep? (Lk8:53, 55; Jn11:11, 14)
Let me expand on this (Lk8:53, 55; Jn11:11, 14)
In Lk it says that the people knew she was dead
53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died.
Also you can know she was dead for we are told in Luke that her spirit returned to her.
55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat.
When someone dies the spirit separates from the body, clearly the case here just with Lazarus
11 This He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep.”
14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
Same scenario isn’t it?
In both the cases with Jairus daughter and with Lazarus death did not have the final say did it? Natural sleep is followed by an awakening, and in our case today she was asleep and had an awakening, was dead, but now is alive!
How? Again it was by the words of Jesus.
The Words of Jesus are the focus of this story.
Word of faith to Jairus (v.36)
He had to have been discouraged and wondering if Jesus did not stop to talk to this woman if he could have saved his daughter who he now is being told is dead.
Suddenly Jesus speaks a word of faith to Him, “be not be afraid any longer, only believe.”
What did Jairus have when he came to Jesus? (a measure of faith) - so JEsus is saying say true to that original faith.
Sometimes faith calls for us to trust in the Lord in the hardest times. Sometimes God delays the answers so you will build your faith more.
We can increase our faith by studying His Word and by our continued walk with Him and by the faith of others.
So Jesus says hold on, here is a word of hope for you now.
Word of hope (v.39)
“The child is not dead, but is asleep”
Mourners there, parents there, they have seen the evidence of the death, but Jesus is speaking as if she were alive.
Oftentimes hope, personal hope is countered by disbelief of others or even ridicule isn’t it? Jesus then separates the parents from the rest of the people.
Word of love and power (v.41)
Unbelief laughs where faith lays hold of the power of God.
Jesus says by my authority, by my power, get up by using the word “I” and the results were the spirit returned to her (Lk8:55; we already read).
Love spoken, love displayed by the power of God, and not only was she healed of death, she was healed of her sickness too.
A word on sleep and death (scriptually speaking)
Death is only sleep for the body until the resurrection (1The4:13-18)
In death the spirit leaves the body and is with Christ (Jam2:26; Php1:20-23)
The body sleeps until the resurrection (1Cor15:51-58)
This is a great word of encouragement to us who have lost a loved one who was a believer and has touched the Lord and the Lord touched them, this blessed assurance for today and our hope for tomorrow.
This has really been a message of joy.
Joy for the woman who was healed after touching the Savior
Joy for the parents who child was touched by Jesus
Joy for us who believe and have been touched by Jesus
Joy that can be shared with others so they too can have the same joy, same hope because of the Word of God
A word of Faith
A word of Hope
A word of love and power
A word for all people
