Notice this. As soon as Christ comes on to the seen, His life is preaching humility.
"Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.” ()
What an unlikely figure! John has prepared us for a powerful figure coming with the might of the Holy Spirit and the judgment of fire.
We might have expected the Coming One to arrive in Jerusalem, reclaiming the throne of David and the temple of Solomon.
Or perhaps he would come out of the desert as a military conqueror, like the ancient warrior David.
Instead, Matthew says simply, “Then Jesus arrived from Galilee.”
He comes as a solitary figure from the insignificant agricultural region of Galilee.
Think of our precious Lord Jesus.
In He is called the vine. It’s a low plant that creeps up the helpful trellis.
Of all the beasts, He comes as a Lamb.
Of all the birds of the air, it’s the dove that is associated with our Lord.
Christ is the rose of the field. He’s the lily of the valley.
When God appeared to Moses, He doesn’t do so in a sturdy mighty oak tree, but in a bush.
A slender, common shrub.
In choosing these ways of revealing Himself, He checks the arrogance of man.

"But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”” ()
Whoa! How is it that the One who knew no sin, would submit Himself to the baptism of repentance.
When we have a high view of Christ, as John certainly did, the condescension of Christ is hard to grasp, especially for the strongest of believers.
John says, “aughh, I think that You need to baptize me!”
Here’s a man filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb, acknowledging that he needs Jesus’ baptism.
We learn that while we’re in this imperfect state, we’re always going to be in need of grace.
John shows us [this morning] that even the purest of souls are most sensible of their own impurities and they seek most earnestly for spiritual washing!
Oh the holiest of us have a deep (never-ending) need of Christ.
It really seems that those who are further along in their understanding of the gospel (by grace) see this need more and more.
John spoke these words in front of large crowd who really put John on a pedestal and
publically he owns the fact, “I need to be baptized by You”.
Oh there’s no degrading in the greatest of men and women this morning that you are left utterly undone without Christ and His grace!

"When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.” ()
“The heavens suddenly opened for Him” Opening to encouraging Him in the great work of redemption that He was going forth to accomplish.
Opening up to encourage us to receive Him and submit to Him.
We discover here that it’s in and through Jesus Christ, the heavens are opened to the children of men.
Sin had closed up the heavens so that all friendly intimacy with God and man. But now Christ has opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Divine love and divine light now shine upon all of God’s repentant believers and they have boldness to enter into the holiest.
