Read 1:19-27, and mark the parts that stick out most in your mind.
The Context:
In the first two sections James lets us know that the test to our spiritual maturity is how we respond to trials (v. 2-12) and temptation (v. 13-18). Now James moves to the next test of our spiritual maturity, “how we respond to the truth revealed in the Word of God.”
What does reveal about the evidence of genuine salvation? __________________________________________________________________________________________________
One of the most reliable evidences of genuine salvation is a hunger for the Word of God.
Children of God dose not have to be taught to hunger for God’s Word.
When the true believer/disciple hears God’s Word, there is an affection for it’s truth and a desire in his/her heart to obey it.
James focuses on the proper reception of God’s Word and then on a proper reaction to God’s Word, reflected in an obedient life.
John
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Keys to the Text
Doers: one who does something by producing something, maker; one who does what is prescribed.
Matt.
Speaks of one who is giving his/her whole being - mind, body, soul, spirit, and emotion.
James is speaking directly of those whose very lives are dedicated not only to learning God’s Word, but also to faithfully and continual obedience to it.
Hearers: one who passively hears but does nothing with what they hear (physical hearing)
Ill. Auditing a class- just requires attendance but dose not require outside study or taking test. The person auditing the class is not held responsible for the information.
Matt. 7:24-26
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
What must be the response of a child of God to the Word of God? Why? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Truth for Today
As important as the proper reception of the Word of God is, without obedience to its truths is not only without benefit, but also becomes a further judgment against its reader.
Obedience to the Word of God is the most basic spiritual requirement and is the common denominator for all true believers.
The bottom line of true spiritual life is not how you feel emotionally but your long term obedience to Scripture.
Genuine believers receive Christ and continue in Him. They hear His Word and do it. They know His commandments and keep them.
