Bottomline: Communication in our relationship with Christ and others requires that not only do we speak but that we also listen.

“Don’t expect your spouse to complete something in you that only God can complete. They will never be able to live up to that standard.” - Matt Anderson

Communicate to Connect.
: Communicate to Connect. (So often we communicate to be heard or to defend a position.) A practical way to do this is to pray together each day
Proverbs 18

21 The tongue has the power of life and death,

and those who love it will eat its fruit.

James

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Respond in love rather than reacting in anger.

Respond in love rather than reacting in anger.

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Respond in love rather than reacting in anger.

Ephesians

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Culture says communicate to be heard and to “win”. Christ says to communicate to love and serve.

Listen requires dropping your stones.

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Respond in love rather than reacting in anger.

In a world full of noise and reactions, be a gift of peace and response.

When Conflict arises don’t run

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

When we disagree, I should fight for unity - not victory.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Model reconciliation and resolution. Normalize forgiveness and grace.

2 corinthians 5-ministry of reconcilation
1 per 4:8- love covers sin
Married couples that identify as Christians...
Less than 8% regular pray together....out of that group less than 1% divorce

When you pray together it helps take your focus off yourself or a fight and onto Christ instead.

Take aways....

pray together
believe the best in each other
practice saying things like…i love you, forgive me, i forgive you

When we disagree, I should fight for unity - not victory.
