Exodus 25:10–22 CSB
“They are to make an ark of acacia wood, forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high. Overlay it with pure gold; overlay it both inside and out. Also make a gold molding all around it. Cast four gold rings for it and place them on its four feet, two rings on one side and two rings on the other side. Make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark in order to carry the ark with them. The poles are to remain in the rings of the ark; they must not be removed from it. Put the tablets of the testimony that I will give you into the ark. Make a mercy seat of pure gold, forty-five inches long and twenty-seven inches wide. Make two cherubim of gold; make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end. At its two ends, make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat. The cherubim are to have wings spread out above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and are to face one another. The faces of the cherubim should be toward the mercy seat. Set the mercy seat on top of the ark and put the tablets of the testimony that I will give you into the ark. I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony; I will speak with you from there about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

The Ark was a step to restore what we broke.

Exodus 25:22 CSB
I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony; I will speak with you from there about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

We always need to be reminded of who God is.

Illus: Faith in God always starts in humility. \
When the priest entered the tabernacle His worship was not to elevate himsef. Every step he took was a step of humility. He was reminded over and over of his unworthiness, need for sacrifice, and holiness of God.
Look at a few of the details, the gold was to remind them of the majesty of God. The Rings were to be a constant reminder of the holiness of God, and they were more than symbolic.
How often do we come to worship flippantly. How often do we come with little conviction over our sin. How often do we come with anger towards our brother. How often do we come thinking more about our preferences than about the grandeur of God.
Just because Jesus has broken down the walls of separation between God and us does not mean we come before him casually.
(CSB)
14 Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness—without it no one will see the Lord.

The Ark reminded Israel of how to follow.

16 Put the tablets of the testimony that I will give you into the ark.
Illus: IN recent days what people expect out of church has changed.
Many times people come wanting to hear a positive word. They want to be told about how good they are. They want their self esteem boosted.
At the end of it, many come wanting a religion that does not lead them to a desperation and dependence on God. Some folks just want a feel self help message .
The foundation of the tabernacle was to lead the worshipers to see their own brokenness.
That is why I preach the way I do. I don’t come with a topic in mind and try to use the back up what I want you to hear.
I preach the word of God alone, calling out sins we struggle with, so that we see our own depravity which leads us back to God.
Illus:Romans 3:19–20 (CSB) (law leads to knowledge of sin… and need for mercy seat)
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are subject to the law,, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world may become subject to God’s judgment., 20 For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

Covering the law is God’s mercy.

17 Make a mercy seat of pure gold, forty-five inches long and twenty-seven inches wide. 18 Make two cherubim of gold; make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end. The faces of the cherubim should be toward the mercy seat. 21 Set the mercy seat on top of the ark and put the tablets of the testimony that I will give you into the ark.

The center of God’s work on this earth is his great act of mercy.

Illus: Jesus was God’s intent from the very beginning. Throughout the Old Testament you begin to see clues of God how is going to work.
Sacrifice was center for the people even enter the tabernacle. The place of God’s presence was called the mercy seat. Everything pointed to atonement, that a price must be paid for people to be free of their sin.
We know that sacrificing animals was not enough to free them from sin. No animal is a fitting substitute for you.
God wanted the tabernacle, every part of it to point to Jesus, who would fulfill each aspect of worship.
We can know God personally because Jesus Christ is the mercy seat of God.
Illus: (CSB) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
A LIVING HOPE
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.

God’s mercy and call to holiness are not in opposition to one another.

21 Set the mercy seat on top of the ark and put the tablets of the testimony that I will give you into the ark.
Illus: We tend to make the bible an either or book.
We look at God’s call to holiness and try to make it into a list of rules to be kept and rules to force others to follow.
On the opposite hand, we look at God’s love and grace and think, if God is love, we are forgiven and should not worry about the commands.
The mercy seat of the Ark enables the worshiper to keep the law.
This is what I mean, when God saves you, you are made perfectly clean, God’s presence resides in you, He changes your thoughts and affections, and you desire to keep the commands of God.
You actually want to follow God. The commands of God and the mercy of God are not opposed to one another, but instead two sides to the christian life.
It is not either or, it is both and.
Illus: (CSB) 20 But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. 22 Have mercy on those who waver; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
EXHORTATION AND BENEDICTION
20 But you, dear friends, as you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life. 22 Have mercy on those who waver; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; have mercy on others but with fear, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

God has worked so that you might know Him.

Exodus 25:22 CSB
I will meet with you there above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the testimony; I will speak with you from there about all that I command you regarding the Israelites.

God meets with us in the mercy of Jesus Christ.

Illus: Today, Jesus died on the cross for your sins. When you trust him by faith, you receive mercy and grace. You are forgiven.
When you are forgiven, God’s spirit resides in you, you love the things God loves and will begin to desire the things of God.
The picture of the Ark is the picture of God’s great act so that you can know Him.
Illus: (CSB) 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST
Why did God place the Mercy Seat above the Law?
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
If God has given you mercy, what place does holiness have in your life?
