What comes into our minds when we think of God is the most important thing about us — A.W. Tozer

God is self-contained

He needs nothing and no one
He needs no one
We, on the other hand, live and move and have our being in Him
All creation is completed dependent upon God for our very existence
God is spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being; power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth — Westminster Shorter Catechism

God is self-existent

Genesis 1:1 NIV
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
There has never been a time He did not exist
Psalm 93:2 NIV
Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.
God is without beginning and without end
The Holy Spirit is without beginning and without end
Jesus is without beginning and without end
Micah 5:2 NIV
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Jesus stepped out of eternity into time
He is the Lord of past, present, future and everything else
Psalm 90:1 NIV
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
If anything exists, then something has always existed. If there was ever absolutely nothing, then nothing could possibly be now, because you cannot get something from nothing. Conversely, if there is something now, then that, in and of itself, demonstrates that there was always something. And that which always is, exists in and of itself. That is, the one who has the power of being within Himself — the Living God --- R.C. Sproul

Isaiah 43:10 NIV
“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.
God was under no constraint, no obligation, no necessity to create. That He chose to do so was purely a sovereign act on His part, caused by nothing outside Himself, determined by nothing but His own mere good pleasure — A.W. Pink

God’s self-existence overwhelms the human mind

Revelation 4:8 NIV
Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”
Isaiah 57:15 NIV
For this is what the high and exalted One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Psalm 102:27 NIV
But you remain the same, and your years will never end.
Our very existence is derived from God’s good pleasure
Our lives: physical, spiritual, and eternal are made possible by God’s will alone
John 1:4 NIV
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
John 1:4 NIV
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
John 5:26 NIV
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
John 11:25 NIV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Acts 17:28 NIV
‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
Romans 9:26 NIV
and, “In the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’ ”

God did not create man to fill a void in Himself

He is self-sufficient…needing nothing
Romans 11:34–35 NIV
“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?”
God is not obligated to anyone
God is the source, means, and goal of all things
Romans 11:36 NIV
For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
For from him (source) and through him (means) and for him are all things. To him (goal) be the glory forever! Amen

Understanding who God is leads to fulfillment and peace within our hearts

For from him (source) and through him (means) and for him are all things. To him (goal) be the glory forever! Amen
As we grasp, more and more, the self-existence of God, we will increase in:
Contentment
Satisfaction
Pleasure
1 Corinthians 8:6 NIV
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
Colossians 1:17 NIV
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Hebrews 1:3 NIV
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Contentment
Satisfaction
Pleasure

NOW WHAT?

We can rest assured in the fact that our eternal God is ready to uphold, strengthen, and encourage us
Proverbs 3:5–6 NIV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
He chose to give us life — and that life is precious to Him — it should be precious to us
