Introduction
When you pray, what do you do?
Do you throw up a few words you learned as a child?
Do you recite what you have heard others do?
Do you talk in old english or do you talk as if you are having an everyday conversation?
Do you pray out loud or do you pray silently?
What do you pray about when you pray?
Who do you pray to?
A survey from last year shows that most widely done spiritual practice is prayer.
A recent survey show that 94% of American adults have prayed at least once in the last three months.
Most say they choose to pray by themselves.
This survey goes on to say that the most common prayer is for gratitude and thanksgiving.
Some pray for the needs of their family and community and for personal guidance in crisis.
Most of the adults in the survey said they prayed to God.
Even though that was a common response, there is a broad definition as to who and what God is.
Some people in this survey pray to saints, a higher power, a divine power within themselves, to their ancestors, the universe or nature.
This study shows that people have active and personal prayer lives.
They are engaging with God outside their houses of worship.
This got me thinking, what if we as a church became more deliberate in our teaching and practicing of prayer?
And what if we offered a model of prayer to in order to make that happen?
What if we helped others to enliven their prayers and embolden people to believe the power of their prayer?
I am convinced that prayer is a barometer of one’s faith.
How you pray is determined by your faith and reliance on God.
The more godly a person is, the more holy a person is, the more that person prays.
Most prayers in the Bible have four basic parts.
There is adoration or praise, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication or petition.
An easy way to remember this is using the acronym ACTS.
Over the next few weeks, I want to teach you these four areas and specifically you can pray utilizing each step.
We will use lots of scripture to help us with our understanding of each area and give ways to apply this method of prayer.
Today we will discuss Adoration.
Adoration means an act of worship.
It is a profound love.
When we adore something, we are literally professing our love for whatever that is we adore.
In the Bible, adoration can also be translated as praise.
When we pray and use adoration, we are adoring God for Who He is: His Person, His Character, and His Attributes.
Psalm 86:12
