Introduction: The fact that there are other created personal beings in the universe besides ourselves both arouses our curiosity as well as alarm. Who are these creatures and what is there intention? Are they friendly or hostile? Should I fear them? Should I worship them?
The Bible tells us that angels are personal created beings who live outside of the range of our senses and who are active in our lives.

Where Do Angels Come From?

Angels are beings created by God.

Colossians 1:16–17 NKJV
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Ezekiel 28:15 NKJV
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.

Angels were most likely created before the earth.

Job 38:4–7 NKJV
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Job 38

Angels were created by God for the glory of God.

Revelation 5:11–13 NKJV
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!” And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

All angels were created as angels.

This means that angels were never anything other than angels. You might hear someone say at a funeral, “He is an angel now.” No one becomes an angel.

What Are Angels?

Angels are personal beings

By personal being we mean that they are self aware and make conscious decisions.
Luke 1:19 NKJV
And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.
They have a will.
Isaiah 14:
Isaiah 14:12–14 NKJV
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’
They are morally aware
Matthew 13:41 NKJV
The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness,
They are intelligent
Ezekiel 28:12 NKJV
“Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
Revelation 22:16 NKJV
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
They are eternal beings
Mattew 25:41
Matthew 25:41 NKJV
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
They have emotion
Job 38:7 NKJV
When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Luke 15:10 NKJV
Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
They have desire
1 Peter 1:12 NKJV
To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
They are accountable to God
1 Corinthians 6:3 NKJV
Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?
2 Peter 2:4 NKJV
For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

Angels are angelic

We are created in the image of God having a body, soul, and spirit. Angels have an immaterial nature which means that they are spirits.
Hebrews 1:7 NKJV
And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits And His ministers a flame of fire.”
However, their nature is not a divine nature as God’s is.
John 4:24 NKJV
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Neither are angels the same as human spirits.
1 Corinthians 2:11 NKJV
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Angels are obviously different as they are different beings. They have some kind of form.
4:
Luke 4:24 NKJV
Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.
Luke 24:4 NKJV
And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
They are indestructible.
Daniel 3:25 NKJV
“Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
They are normally invisible
2 Kings 6:15–17 NKJV
And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
They do not die
Luke 20:36 NKJV
nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Sometime, when appearing to humans, they are radiant and dazzling.
Matthew 28:3 NKJV
His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
At least some have wings, if not all. Cherubim and seraphim definitely do have wings.
Daniel 9:21 NKJV
yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.
Ezekiel 1:5–8 NKJV
Also from within it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the soles of calves’ feet. They sparkled like the color of burnished bronze. The hands of a man were under their wings on their four sides; and each of the four had faces and wings.
Revelation 14:6 NKJV
Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people—

What Are Angels Called in the Bible?

Generically, angels can be referred to as “spirit”.
Hebrews 1:14 NKJV
Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?
Hebrews 1:
The most common title for angel is angel which means messenger.
Luke 1:11–19 NKJV
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.
The only personal names of angels revealed in the Bible are Michael (“Who is Like God”), Gabriel (“Mighty one of God”), and Lucifer (“Light-bearer”) which was Satan’s name before the fall. “Satan” is actually a title which means “adversary.”

What Are the Different Kinds of Angels?

The angels are separated into two kinds and are distinguished by their moral character: good and evil. Like Adam and Eve, the angels had an opportunity to choose whom they would serve. The majority chose to serve God while about a third chose to rebel. This period is not described to us in great detail because we have no need to know a great deal about it.
The leader of the good angels is Michael while the leader of the evil angels is Satan.
Jude 9 NKJV
Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”
Matthew 25:41 NKJV
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

Holy Angels

Angels have specific roles
Cherubim - Cherubim are portrayed in the Bible as belonging to the highest order of angels
Exodus 25:17–22 NKJV
“You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two and a half cubits shall be its length and a cubit and a half its width. And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work you shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim at the two ends of it of one piece with the mercy seat. And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat. You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel.

Cherubim are closely associated with God’s throne

Genesis 3:24 NKJV
So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
They are also called living creatures
Ezekiel 10:15 NKJV
And the cherubim were lifted up. This was the living creature I saw by the River Chebar.
They are probably the beasts in revelation who are active in the worship of God and in carrying out God’s judgment
Revelation 4:6–8 NKJV
Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”
Revelation 6:1
Revelation 6:1 NKJV
Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.”
Revelation 6:3 NKJV
When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.”
Revelation 6:5 NKJV
When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.
Seraphim - Seraphim hover near God’s throne proclaiming His glory
Isaiah 6:1–7 NKJV
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.”
Isaiah 6:2–7 NKJV
Isaiah 6:1–2 NKJV
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
Angel of the Lord - The angel of the Lord is sometimes a theophany

Now the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.” Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” And the Angel of the Lord said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction. He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”
Genesis 16:
2 Samuel 24:16 NKJV
And when the angel stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the destruction, and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
