Segue into Case Study of Lot

Lot walks by Sight, not by Faith

Gen. 13

Lot sees that the Jordan Valley is well watered everywhere. v. 10

Like the garden of the Lord
Like Egypt
He chooses this for himself
He moves as far as Sodom, where wicked, great sinners live.
Sodom is linked to Canaan, whom is cursed through Ham, the son of Noah. & 10
Lot sought the satisfaction of worldly desires, rather than the delight of obedience unto God.

Lot’s First Warning

Read vv. 8-16
King Chedorlaomer and his ally kings, defeat Sodom and Gomorrah, and take Lot and his possessions captive.
Take note that v. 12 also indicates that Lot was dwelling there, in order to make a point.
Abraham rescues Lot from the enemy kings.
Lot’s rescue is a “blessing” from Abraham.
Abram is blessed by Melchizedek, and Abram tithes in response to the blessing

God’s Mercy through Abram’s Pleading

Gen. 18

The Lord and 2 angels visit Abram at his tent. vv. 1-8
The Lord promises a child to them for the 3rd time. Chapters 15, and 17 previously. v. 10
The Lord declares judgment against Sodom. vv. 16-21
Abram intercedes on behalf of the righteous in Sodom, ie Lot. vv. 22-32
The Lord hears his plea. v. 33

Lot is scarcely saved.

Read vv. 1-29
Angels enter Sodom, Lot is at the gate. v. 1
Lot takes the angels to his home. v. 3
Lot has long since settled in Sodom. He is no longer living as a faithful sojourner with tents and altars like his uncle.
He has chosen to settle among the wicked in order to satisfy the desires of his eyes.
The wicked men of the city seek to abuse the angels and Lot offers his daughters instead. vv 7-8
The angels save Lot and his daughters and struck the wicked men with blindness.
Angels warn Lot of coming destruction. vv 12-13
Lot delays his escape. v. 15-16
The Lord is merciful towards Lot, so the angels grab him and his family by the hand!
See the Lord’s love and mercy towards Lot!
Lot persists in disobedience, he requests to go to a little city nearby, rather than the hills.
Lot’s wife looks back at the life she is leaving, turns to a pillar of salt.

Remember Lot’s wife. 33 mWhoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will nkeep it

Lot’s daughters betray him and commit incest with him, because they too failed to trust the one true God.
Disobedience leads to further disobedience.

Conclusion

God’s covenant love is relentless
Lot’s second rescue is again linked to God’s covenant promise to Abraham, that he would be a blessings to all peoples.
Lot’s second rescue is again linked to God’s covenant promise to Abraham, that he would be a blessings to all peoples.
God desires full obedience from his people, and he disciplines those whom he loves.
The outcome of Lot’s life should be an example to us all
The one who treasures their life will ultimately lose it.
Let us follow the Lord in full assurance of faith, for he is worthy to be trusted!

Remember Lot’s wife. 33 mWhoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will nkeep it
