Baptism Philips story
This morning we will be baptizing some people, and we will be baptizing quite a few young people
We have spoke with them and explained to them baptism, but this morning how fitting it would be to speak on baptism
We are to be baptized as Jesus was baptized
Jesus is our example and we are to be baptized
It is a command
Jesus tells us
Baptism is an outward expression of what happened on the inside of your heart
But this morning we wanted to look at a story of baptism
This morning we will look at the story of Phillip
Philip was a missionary for Jesus
The story starts
vs 26 Phillip is obedient
in the midst of not knowing what is going on it is clear that the Holy Spirit speaks to him and Scripture records that he got up and went
Court official of Ethiopians
This person would have had an in with the government of Ethiopia

Much like the queen, even more specifically the queen mother
There is I believe data that shows the Ethiopian church can trace their roots back to this particular encounter
Scripture he was reading
Isaiah is referring to Jesus here
The Court Official is reading from Isaiah and doesn't understand what is going on
I mean lets be honest, how many of us have read some things and not known what is going on or understanding what is going on
I read it and read it again and I ask people I trust
Those of you who are wiser and can understand somethings be willing and prepared to share with people
Phillip is prepared to share with him
You and I should be prepared to share with people, but you cannot be prepared if you haven't read it yourself
so you need to read your Bible
Phillip Shares with the Court Official
That Jesus died for Him
That Jesus paid His debt of Sin
Phillip explains to the court official that he is a sinner
He shares that he has done some bad things
You and I are sinners, you and I have done things that are wrong, and we have done some bad things
Sin is anything that is against God
Sin is the bad things you and I do
lying, cheating, disobeying, hatred
You and I are sinners
Phillip explains that Jesus loves the court official so much that he died for him even though He was a sinner
Imagine the relief this court official must have felt when Phillip told him that after he was a sinner that he told him that someone loved him so much that He Jesus gave his life for him
See Jesus loves you so much that even though you and I are sinners, were sinners He still choose to die for you and I
See what makes so important is
Philip begins to explain to him that he deserved death because of the bad things he has done BUT
see if changes the conversation with the but
you can complement someone and then say but and do you know you take away the complement
Philip is telling him some bad news but then takes it away with a free gift, the only thing you have to do is accept that free gift
you and I deserve to die for the sins we have committed
the bad news
BUT
see But God loved us so much that He took our place of death
Philip then told him that all he had to do was to accept the free gift
confess with your mouth, tell people Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart and you will be saved
The Official said ok
he confessed with his mouth and believed in his heart
He gave his life to Jesus
you can do the same thing here today
you accept the free gift of eternal life with Jesus
I believe that Jesus calls us to be baptized,
there is nothing special in the water, but it is an outward expression of what has gone on inside your heart
The Official asks why what stops him from being baptized
Nothing
This is a picture of what baptism is
It is you dying with Christ, dying to your old self
and just like Christ rose from death so do you to walk with Jesus in the newness of life
Closing
the invitation is open
if you are here today and want to begin a new relationship with Jesus
there will be people down at the front to help you with that
or maybe you are here today and need to rededicate your life to Jesus or maybe you need to join this local body of believers
