What Is the Baptism With The Holy Spirit

Text - Isaiah 61:1-3
Main Point - Christ Jesus baptizes His followers with the Holy Spirit to empower them for His service.
Hidden reminder - Just want to make it clear. Jesus does not empower us for service so we can do what we want to do. He empowers His followers with the Holy Spirit power, the power of God to be of service to God.
Today we are going to finish up this 3 part introduction in answering the question “What is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit”
2 weeks ago we learned what the Baptism is not:
The New Birth
It is not Sanctification
A Reward for Christian Service
Is not Hereditary
Last week we learned what the Baptism is:
A promise from our Father
A gift
A command from Christ
Over the last 2 weeks I have hinted what the Baptism is:
“The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is not something to have, but something to use. It is not the height of spiritual experience, but one of the tremendously essential foundations for further development and service.” - Guy Duffield
“The baptism with the Holy Spirit is a unmistakable, clear, positive experience, that comes after salvation (be it a few moments or up to a few years). It is when the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Godhead comes UPON the believer to anoint and energize them for special service.”
It is when the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Godhead comes UPON the believer to anoint and energize them for special service.
Simply put: Christ Jesus baptizes His followers with the Holy Spirit to empower them for His service.
When we have a desire to do the will of God, Christ gives us His power to do His will.
Now as simple as that sounds we do need to take time to unpack what we have been EMPOWERED to do.

Power for service

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me”

Jesus did not start His ministry until He received the Holy Spirit
Text (,) - “Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. 15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.”
Text () -”The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free.”
Text () - “And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
Text () - “But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.”
We receive power (a promise, gift and command) from Jesus Christ when He baptizes us with the Holy Spirit to be His witness.
Text () - “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
A witness
Transition - The power to preach the Gospel

Power to preach the good news

“To Preach the good tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to the captives, proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God.”

Jesus gives us the power to bring “good tidings” to the poor in spirit.
Jesus did it first by saying:
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him” - Jesus
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him” - Jesus
Text () - “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Jesus told (John’s followers who came to see if Jesus is the Christ), “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seem.” “the Good News is being preached to the poor.”
The best story is of the women who had been bleeding for 12 years.
She had spent all she had on doctors who could not heal her.
She was shamed because of the bleeding (it made her unclean and thus shamed in the sight of religious eyes).
She was spiritually broken and poor.
She was so desperate to reach Jesus for some relief. it was by her faith that she was healed and restored, not just physically but spiritually as well.
Jesus gives us the power to bring “good tidings” to the poor in spirit.
Here is what bring “good tidings” to the poor is:
Everyone who is thirsty, Come to the waters; And you who have no money,Come, buy and eat.
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy?
3 Incline your ear, and come to Me.
Listen carefully to (what Jesus says), and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Hear, and your soul shall live;
Be willing to hear with your ears, and come to (Jesus). Hear, and your soul will live;
Text: () - Peter stood up among the other 11 and preached a message of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified
The New King James Version. (1982). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
Text: () - Peter stood up among the other 11 and preached a message of Jesus Christ and Him Crucified
Peter did just what God had told Isaiah to teach.
He spoke the Truth of Jesus Christ in the Power of the Holy Spirit given to him by JESUS.
His target audience were the ones who were spiritually bankrupt.
That day 3000 people gave their life to CHRIST.
Text () Poor man outside the gates of the temple.
The poor man was begging for money to buy food
The poor man was so desperate for something that he sat outside the church building.
Peter and John heading up the the temple full of the Holy Spirit.
Peter turned to this man and told him “money I do not have to give you. But what I do have I give to you in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST! Now stand up!”
The good news for this poor man was not money... but that Jesus Christ is able to restore physical and spiritual brokenness.
Jesus gives us the power to OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE FREEDOM to everyone who is held captive by darkness.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Jesus taught us the truth of being set free:
“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
Jesus demonstrated this by freeing the demon possessed man
He had gone across the sea and found a man who was possessed.
Jesus commanded the evil Spirit to come out of the man.
a great many of evil spirits came out of the man.
in the end the man was set free from darkness and regained his sanity.
Paul set a little girl free from an evil spirit.
While walking to a prayer meeting a young girl was possessed by a demon and had kept disrupting the group of followers.
Paul who was Holy Spirit filled
After a few days of this Paul commanded (by the Power of the Holy Spirit) the spirit to come out of the little girl and she was set free from the darkness within her.
Jesus gives us the power to OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE The year Jesus saved us from our sins.
Jesus said it on the Cross
The acceptable year of the Lord
It is finished!
Jesus spoke His final words that had fulfilled the Isiah 61 prophecy. To “proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord”
Let me explain: The Old Testament has a process that every 50th year is to be called a Jubilee and anything that was held as debts were to be set free. Slaves were to be set free.
Debts set free - “Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to your own clan.”
Set this year apart as holy, a time to proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live there. It will be a jubilee year for you, when each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors and return to your own clan.
Slaves Set free - “In the Year of Jubilee each of you may return to the land that belonged to your ancestors.”
The Acceptable year of the Lord is: The year that Jesus had taken up the Cross and set free anyone who was held as a salve to darkness and paid the debts of sin that prevented anyone to have a relationship with God.
Through the New Testament Scriptures (Letters or Acts) This was announced to everyone who was able to hear.
Phillip preached the good news and the Year that the LORD saved us from Sin in Simaria.
So did Peter and John.
On the road Philip shared the good news to the ethopian unic.
Paul on the road to desmasicus saw the Lord and heard the message of Jesus Christ.
from that point until today that same message of the Year that God saved us has been proclaimed.
Jesus gives us the power to OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE The day of vengeance of our God
Jesus spoke of the coming day of Judgment
Jesus spoke of a story about weeds and wheat and when He was in privet with his followers he explained to them the meaning of the story.
“The Son of Man is the farmer who plants the good seed.
The field is the world, and the good seed represents the people of the Kingdom.
The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one.
The enemy who planted the weeds among the wheat is the devil.
The harvest is the end of the world, and the harvesters are the angels.
“Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world.
The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom.
Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!
Again Jesus speaks with His followers this time before He had gone to the Cross, He told them this:
“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.
“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.
After Jesus had gone to the Cross the Apostels and followers of Christ continued to boldly announce the coming day of the Lord.
Paul wrote to the Corinth church on this matter and said to them “For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”
Peter spoke of this when he wrote his second letter “But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.”
Closing

Christ Jesus baptizes His followers with the Holy Spirit to empower them for His service.

Text: () - Jewish leaders asked Peter “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?” Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and told them it was in the name Jesus Christ who healed a man who could not walk.
Text: () - After Peter and John were punished for boldly proclaim Jesus Christ they gone back to the group of followers for a prayer meeting “After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.”
Transition -

Power for spiritual warfare

A part of the service to God that we do, will lead us at some point into the direct conflict with the Spiritual Realm.
Eph 6:12
Jesus gives us the power to OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE the good news to the poor
We are equipped with power from God for warfare
Without the power we are hopelessly helpless...

God our Father PROMISED us that He would give us a free GIFT that Jesus has COMMANDED us to receive.
