Jesus begins John 6 with feeding 5,000 and likely had over 20,000 follow him. He ends the Chapter with only 11 true disciples that are still confused as those that left, but know that Jesus has the Words of Eternal Life. This sermon walks through 3 types of people that hear the words of eternal life and how they each respond.

Turn if you would to the Gospel of John, chapter 6. I will be reading starting in verse 22 beginning the “Bread of Life” discourse and read through the end of the chapter, verse 71, to get the full context. However we will be focused, primarily on the end of the passage with his disciples, verses 60 to 71.
Stand if you word to hear the

I Am the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Background

I want to give you a little background about why we’re looking at this passage. We believe in expository preaching as you know. But with Bill in a Gospel, there are several accounts that follow the chronology of Christ’s ministry that are not recorded in all of the Gospels, as you’re aware. We came across a phrase in Mark’s gospel that 2 weeks ago as Bill was wrapping up he covered and touched on. The verse is in . Picking it up in verse 51, the text said:
Mark 6:51–52 ESV
51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
Bill gave us a great description of verse 51 regarding the boat and the storm stopping and went into detail about their being astounded…their minds blown. And he talked at length about how a Christian heart can be hardened, at the end of verse 52.
But first half of verse 52 is, “for they did not understand about the loaves...”. This phrase is essentially expounded over 50 verses in , gives us the fuller context of the loaves and more importantly, what they didn’t understand about the loaves.
So let’s regain our context surrounding the loaves, but now through and picking it up after the leftover 12 baskets we see that in:
v.14 the people saw the sign and said “This is indeed the Prophet...”
v.15 Jesus perceives they will take him by force to make him a king withdraws...”
We learned in Mark that Jesus forced the disciples in the boat and somehow dismissed the crowd.
v.16-21 We have Jesus walking on the water at night and gets in the boat with the disciples and they no longer struggle to row to Capernaum against the wind, because the wind stopped.
v. 22-25 picks us up the next day that the crowd eventually catches up in Capernaum and they’re puzzled about how Jesus could have gotten there so fast since he didn’t get in the boat with the disciples and they start asking him about this
And then we see Jesus starts the Bread of Life "I AM”…the first “I AM”. There is not time for us to go through v.22-59 at any length and unpack this, but this is the discourse and context of perhaps one of the most confusing words Jesus ever spoke yet nonetheless leads to one of the greatest confessions of the disciples, despite the confusion.
With the clarity of the Gospel that we know now with the gift and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we don’t look at this section of John with such confusion. We see a rich narrative here.
Let me end the background by summarizing quickly the Bread of Life by going through the truths, topically, that Jesus hits on in repetitive fashion between verses 25 and the end of 59 that describe the Bread of Life before he talks about the section that confused the disciples in eating “my flesh”:

So, in short, if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who died and was raised again, by the will of the Father for you personally, you have eternal life and thus know what it means to “eat” the bread of life.
So, in short, if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who came down to earth, died and was raised again, by the will of the Father for you personally, changing your life to live with and for Him, you have eternal life and thus know what it means to “eat” the bread of life.
With this as the backdrop, we will look more carefully at verses 60 to 71 in particular as we discuss two types of disciples. As we do, we’re going to divide this message into looking at 3 kinds of hearers who physically heard the words of eternal life:
How are the words of life received by the hardened unbeliever (looking back before v.60)
How are they received by the professing disciple
How are they received by the chosen disciple
And then lets see how we can apply these words...
We know he intentionally perplexes those that are hardened in unbelief, speaking in parables, Yet patiently and thoroughly explaining the meaning to his disciples alone. We saw that vividly in the parable of the soils in .
But we don’t see that pattern here, in .

I. Words of Life to the Hardened Unbeliever

There two groups in our context that show truly no signes of true spiritual life or discernment whatsoever: Those just interested in earthly, worldly life and the Jewish leaders of the time

A. Worldly Followers

Seeking to make him King v. 14-15

Wanting their bellies full v. 26

Wanting to see a sign!?!?! v.30

(Even the “give us this bread {bread of heaven} always” fails…they have no interest v.34

B. Jewish Leaders

1. Grumbled over his being from heaven v.41

2. Confused about his “flesh” v. 52

II. Words of Life to the Professing Disciples

A. Meaning of Disciple

B. The Disciples’ breathed the air of the unsaved

C. The Words of Jesus They Misunderstood

C.

1. “Hard Saying”

2. “Grumble”

D. They Didn’t See The Authority of Jesus’ Words

3. “Feed on me” Not eating “Me” but internalize who I am!

D. What

III. Words of Life to the Chosen Disciples

B. The Difference Between the 11 and the Many “Disciples”

1. What Are the Marks of a True Disciple?

a. Love Others

Luke 14:26–33 ESV
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

a. Love Others

John 13:35 ESV
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

b. Hear and Trust His Word

b. Read and Trust His Word

John 8:31 ESV
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

c. Bear Fruit

c. Love Others

John 13:35 ESV
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

d. Bear Fruit

d. Bear Fruit

John 15:8 ESV
8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

d. Love Jesus Most of All

2. How Did they Respond to the Words of Life?

8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2016), .

2. How Did they Respond to the Words of Life?

3. In the End, What Makes the Difference?

IV. APPLICATION

A. How affected are you by the world?

B. How do you respond to the word?

C. Are you proving to be His Disciple?
