Jesus’ earthly ministry is coming to a close.

He is now preparing for the cross.

Look in verse 1

Its just before the Passover Feast.

Judas has the heart of betrayal.

Jesus knows that he will successfully complete his task of redemption.

Verse 1:

Before the Feast of the Passover.

This forms the context

Thats why there are so many people here.

Its the time of the passover where there are over 2 million Jews in and around Jerusalem.

Thats why John mentions this.

Jesus knew that His hour had come-

The Passover was a long event,

He knew this because He is God.

Predetermined

This is the hour he has been speaking about.

The hour of glory.

The hour of pain.

The hour of his return back to the Father who had sent Him.

having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Two important truths are revealed in this brief statement:

The object of His love.

His own.

His sheep.

Like a husband coming after his bride, he pursues her to the end.

With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.

We are the object of his love.

The quality of his love

He had demonstrated His love to them in many ways already.

With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.

His calling them.

His teaching them.

Every miracle.

Now, in His humble service.

Soon, with His death

Forever, as our intercessor

With every step Jesus demonstrates his love.

Today we see lapses in love all the time.

A broken home

An unfaithful spouse.

Jesus love is perfect.

Jesus love is perfect.

Jesus’s love is never ending.

It isn’t careless or even reckless.

Its enduring and it is careful.

Vs 1 there is love

Vs 2 there is hate

John is setting the context.

giving us this bit of information, let you know that whatever happens next, there will be a betrayal.

Jesus predicted this:

While Jesus was loving them to the end, hatred had found its way into the heart of one of Jesus’s closest friends.

But even in the midst of this, Jesus is confident.

Vs 3 there is confidence

Jesus is confident of a few things:

His soon coming future.

Pain, death, shame.

His guaranteed victory.

All thats left is to complete the task.

He also knows that he will soon return to the Father.

So, in middle of His love.

Hatred is brewing, but Jesus is confident.

What does He do?

Jesus takes the place of the servant.

In this case there wasn’t, so Jesus got up.

The Exchange with Peter (6-11) Peter always had to speak.

This is the second time Peter has publicly rebuked Jesus.

Peter sees Christ as Master and LordHe sees him for all of the above mentioned terms.

Because of this, Peter does not see the need for Jesus to serve but to be served.

Jesus came to serve, not to be served.
