Lesson 5
Lesson 5
Are you concerned with accuracy when the Word of God is taught? Are you concerned that the truth is passed on to the next generation or to those who currently are lacking in understanding and wisdom? Do you desire to see the lives of others changed as a result of information being give to them? You may have the spiritual gift of teaching.
A person may become a Sunday school teacher out of love and compassion for children. He/she is motivated to teach by a gift of mercy.
A person may be motivated to teach because he is concerned that too much emphasis is being placed upon the application of Scripture and not enough on the black-and-white, right-and-wrong absolutes of the Bible. He/she is motivated to teach out of a gift of prophecy.
A person who is gifted to teach is motivated solely because he loves the truth and wants to impart God’s Word with accuracy and clarity to others.
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.
Who are the best teachers that you have learned from? What made their teaching so effective?
Characteristics of the Gift of Teaching
The gift of teaching includes a great concern to provide a systematic sequence.
The gift of teaching includes a concern with the accuracy of words and the use of language.
The gift of teaching includes a delight in researching and reporting as many details as possible.
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
What is the role of the teacher in the above process? What is the role of the teacher’s audience?
4 . The gift of teaching includes a great interest in knowing as much as possible about a subject being studied.
5. The gift of teaching is concerned with the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, both of which are vital to wisdom.
6. The gift of teaching is primarily concerned with fact, not illustration or application.
7. The gift of teaching is usually pursued in a very systematic way.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
What does it mean to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly”? How is this done? What role does wisdom and teaching play in the process?
What does it mean to “admonish” someone? How is this different from teaching? How do the two work together?
Words of Caution for the Teacher
A teacher must be a good communicator- Sometimes teachers are content to present the facts as they have studied them, without making their subject a matter of interest or application to their students.
A teacher must be open to new means of presenting information- Teachers have a tendency to be too narrow in their interpretation of what is information, fact or knowledge. They see straightforward declarative statements as desirable.
A teacher must not get hung up on small errors in detail- Teacher will sometimes dismiss an entire presentation solely on the basis of one particular error.
A teacher must always be open to the intuitive spiritual leading of the Holy Spirit to discern truth- Truth is more than facts.
A teacher must always look for the big picture- Some teachers become too narrow in their approach and fail to see the broad background or the general direction.
A teacher must never substitute academic degrees for genuine wisdom from God.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
What does it mean to be “rightly dividing the word of truth”? How is this done? What steps are involved?
What does it mean to be “a worker who does not need to be ashamed”? Of what might a teacher be ashamed before God? How is this avoided?
Qualities of the Godly Teacher
Self-control: An ability to focus on the issue at hand and to avoid all detours as they prepare the lesson that they are to teach.
Reverence and respect for the Word of God: Seeking the truth of God’s Word, never approaching it with the intent of disputing it or denying its validity.
Diligence and thoroughness: Sticking to the study and research until they have a thorough knowledge of the subject and have prepared diligently the best lesson possible.
Dependability: So that others can always rely upon them to “rightly divide” the Word of truth.
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
According to these verses, what is required of a person who wants to teach others form God’s Word?
What role does verbal communication play in teaching others? What role does one’s example play? How do the above verses apply to each?
Being Aware of False Teachers
Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Teacher must recognize that they always teach, not only with their words but by the example of their lives.
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
What tactics do false teachers use to deceive people, according to these verses? How does the process work? How can one identify a false teacher?
What “destructive heresies” are being taught in the church today? How are people being led astray by false teachers?
