The weightiest word in any language is its word for God — A.W. Tozer
God is a spirit-being — therefore He is invisible and infinite
Sometimes we lose sight of the deep and weighty nature of God
THEOLOGY
The study of God
The study of God’s attributes
How we understand the nature of God determines who we understand everything else about the Bible, Christianity, etc.
Three Words that Define the Spirituality of God
Three Words that Define the Spirituality of God
Immaterial
Without a physical body
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Anthropomorphism
The Bible records various times where God’s “eyes, hands, arms, ears, etc. are referred to
How are we to understand this concept?
These are figures of speech (anthropomorphisms)
God sometimes reveals Himself to people is ways that they can understand
He does this through assigning human qualities to Himself
He sees, Knows, holds on to, wields His mighty sword
He communicates Himself to us in terms we are familiar with.
God’s immaterial nature is an encouraging blessing to us if we think about it
He has no limitations like do
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.
Hebrews 13:1
2. Invisible
Invisible
If He is immaterial…then He is obvious invisible to the human eye
This is why faith is important
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
The only physical manifestation of God is seen in Jesus
No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.
Sometimes His glory is radiated — it emanates from the Lord as light or fire.
Moses “show me your glory”
the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
If we want to know what God is truly like
We see Him in His Word
Special revelation
We see Him in Creation
General revelation
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
In His creation we see Him — beauty, order, design, majesty, sovereignty, vengeance, wrath, love, - etc.
Why is the incarnation of Christ so very important?
In Him the world gets a glimpse of the living God, in the fleshj
What does God look like?
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
....immaterial, thus invisible...
3. Infinite
No limitations
No boundaries
No matter where or when you look
God’s fulness is there
He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.
Job 5:9
He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
miracles that cannot be counted.
No limits to His knowledge or power
Nothing is impossible
No matter where you are in your journey with Christ…you have just scratched the surface
