Sermon in a sentence - Courage is having a Conviction in the Living God, a focus on the Cause, a memory previous Conquests, a Confidence in the Lord and Completing the task at hand.
Paint the picture: two armies encamped on opposing hillsides. A brook runs through the middle of the valley. Goliath comes out every day to taunt the Israelites, coming closer each day. 40 days have passed.
Goliath’s description (4-7):
9’ 9” tall
Coat of mail that weighed 125 lbs.
Tip of his spear weighed 15 lbs.
He is a giant representing doubt, railing against God and his people.
David has been sent by his father to check on his brothers.

Others cowered in fear. David didn’t look at Goliath the Giant, but at the Greatness of His God.
David was convinced of the Living God. He is present, he will move on behalf of his people. He is living!
This world is full of challenge, do you act like you serve a living God?
- Why should the heathen say, Where is their God? Our God is in the heavens, he has done as he pleases. Their gods are of silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have eyes, but see not… House of Israel (Aaron, you that fear the Lord) trust in the Lord. He is their help and their shield.
A courageous heart is rooted in conviction of who God is.

Eliab accused David of abandoning his responsibility, pride and evil motives.
David turned the criticism away and focused on the greater cause at hand. He was more concerned about defending God’s honor than defending his own reputation.

A courageous heart stays focused on the cause, ultimately the glory of God.

Saul, was skeptical that David could face Goliath.
David responded by telling of the victories that God had given him in the past.
A courageous heart reminds itself of how God was worked in the past.

He did not embrace someone else’s methods, but trusted solely in the Lord.
David, a boy with leather clothes, a staff and a sling, faced the giant armed and covered in armor.
His complete trust was in the Lord and his goal was to show the nation God’s power.
and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
A courageous heart is confident in God to fight battles for it.

You can come right up to the point of victory, but not finish it. David made certain by using Goliath’s own sword to cut off his head. The giant of fear and intimidation.
He took trophies from the event, Goliath’s armor. It would remind him of God’s power in future challenges.
