First I want you to turn to -see below
10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

What we see is not what God sees sometimes

Perhaps, to a stander-by, the sacrifices of Cain and Abel would have seemed both alike good. Adam accepted them both, but God, who sees not as man sees, did not. God had respect to Abel and to his offering, and showed his acceptance of it, probably by fire from heaven; but to Cain and his offering he had not respect.

Cain was a wicked indiviual
There was a difference in the characters of the persons offering. Cain was a wicked man, led a bad life, under the reigning power of the world and the flesh; and therefore his sacrifice was an abomination to the Lord (Prov. 15:8
8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: But the prayer of the upright is his delight.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

But Abel was a righteous man; he is called righteous Abel (Mt. 23:35); his heart was upright and his life was pious; he was one of those whom God’s countenance beholds (Ps. 11:7) and whose prayer is therefore his delight, Prov. 15:8. God had respect to him as a holy man, and therefore to his offering as a holy offering

Verse 4 we see that Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock

To do this Abel had to sacrifice one of the firstlings of his flock and the fat thereof
Abel understood the significance in a blood offering
When Adam and Eve sinned and took of the fruit of the garden they realized that they were naked and Adam said he was afraid and hid himself before God
God clothed them with the skins of an animal
To do this something had to die
Adam and eve could come before God and not be ashamed because of the sin they had committed because it was covered through a sacrifice of blood

Verse 5
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Sometimes we expect God to just accept what we bring while he is a righteous and a holy God
Some this morning have had God bring you through things and now your countenance has fallen again
Can I tell you that God said if we do not well that sin lieth at the door ( like a lion) waiting on his prey

43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by his own fruit.
The tree must be good, else the fruit cannot be pleasing to the heart-searching God.
We see the Curse of SIN

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
Verse 10 tells us that Vengeance cries out from the earth
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Verse 13 shows us a punishment that is too great for us to bear
The burden of sin was never meant for you to bear
‘The sacrifice was made to cover your sins so you could reap everlasting with him

Abel never prospered his whole life and i never read of a time of repentance in Gods word
Even though we see evil we see a Mark of Grace
