A. His Authority is Personal

The purpose of Matthew – Jesus as King.
Jesus – 3.5 years of time with them, miracle worker, teacher, risen, God – now coming up beside them.

B. His Authority is Extensive – all!

1. Heaven

all! Over angels, over the throne room, the dwelling places, the heavenly temple

2. Earth

all! Over world powers, kings, emperors, presidents, prime ministers, the church, animals, physics, elements, cells, weather, you!
What a comfort! Are you submitting or are you subverting?

Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95

Mathēteúō means not only to learn, but to become attached to one’s teacher and to become his follower in doctrine and conduct of life.[1] The Teacher that they are to become like is Jesus. Our job is to continually bring them into contact with Jesus. Not, “I do life this way and so should you.” But, “I do life this way because that is how I leaned it from Jesus, and so you should learn it from Jesus too.”

Missionary in Japan - sit down next to someone on the train and ask them, “do you want to go to hell?” if they said no, then they would say, “pray this prayer with me, ‘Jesus save me and give me eternal life. Amen.’” Once they said the prayer they would stand up and go to the next person on the train and ask them, “do you want to go to hell?” Does this fulfill the King’s command? No!

IV. The King’s Presence (20)

Matthew 28:20 NASB95
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

A. His Presence is personal

A. His presence is personal

Jesus is with us through the person of the Holy Spirit

B. His Presence is constant

Jesus is with us at all times

C. His Presence is Durable

Jesus is with us as long as we need Him and until we are with Him.
Acts 18:9–10 NASB95
9 And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent; 10 for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.”
This answers the question that is inevitably asked, “How can we possibly do what Jesus asks?” Because Jesus is with us the real question is, “How can we possibly fail?”
This Great Commission is THE reason we are here on this earth.
