1. The Holy Spirit is not an Impersonal Force, rather a person
2. The grammar of points to the Holy Spirit’s Personality
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
3. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Paraclete as just as Jesus was- ;
4. puts the Holy Spirit on the same level as the Father and Son, who are personal agents
More thoughts about the Personality of the Holy Spirit
More thoughts about the Personality of the Holy Spirit
1. In , it seems that the Holy Spirit coordinated with Church leaders indicating personality.
“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials:
2. The Holy Spirit has intelligence indicating personality-
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
3. The Holy Spirit has a will –
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
4. The Holy Spirit has emotions –
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
5. The Holy Spirit can be affected displaying personality – ; ; ; ;
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
“While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Do not quench the Spirit;
“You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
“Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Work of the Holy Spirit
Old Testament
Old Testament
1. Creation – ;
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
“By His breath the heavens are cleared;
His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent.
2. Future Out pouring –
Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
3. Giving of Prophecy and Scripture – ;
As He spoke to me the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me.
And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him.
for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
4. Giving of Specific Skills – ;
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship,
to make artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze,
and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, that he may work in all kinds of craftsmanship.
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.
5. Administration through the Judges
6. Give Israel’s Kings certain Abilities – Saul prophesied and David’s anointing
When they came to the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
The Life of Jesus
The Life of Jesus
1. Conception –
The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
2. He would baptize with the Spirit –
“I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
3. Baptism –
Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
4. Lead him into the wilderness –
Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.
5. The Spirit filled Jesus’ ministry –
And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
6. Miracles were attributed to the Holy Spirit –
And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand.
“If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?
“If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges.
The life of Christians
The life of Christians
1. Conversion: a person’s turning to God – involves conviction of guilt
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
2. Regeneration: transformation of a person and the implantation of spiritual energy –
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
3. Empowers believers:
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
4. Teaches believers: the idea of an advocate –
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
5. Intercession for believers
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
6. Indwells in believers
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
7. Sanctifies believers –
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
8. Produces a way of life in the believer –
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
9. Imparts gifts to believers.
