GOD GAVE HIS PEOPLE HIS COMMANDS FOR IMPORTANT REASONS
GOD GAVE HIS PEOPLE HIS COMMANDS FOR IMPORTANT REASONS
God gave His commands to His people long ago because they were right and they were what was best for them. - ; ;
; ;

GOD’S COMMANDS FOR ISRAEL WERE WHAT WAS BEST

Ezekiel 20:10–11 ESV
So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live.
Ezekiel 20:11 ESV
I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live.
Proverbs
Proverbs 4:4 ESV
he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.
Proverbs 6:23 ESV
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
God’s commands were not meaningless rituals or unnecessary rules but what was better for them.
GOD’S COMMANDS WERE A BETTER WAY TO LIVE PHYSICALLY
God’s laws would keep them physically healthy and free from disease
- they would not have any of the diseases of other nations
Exodus 15:26 ESV
saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
- The animals, birds and fish that were unclean were more likely to harbor sicknesses
Leviticus 11:
Leviticus 11:6–8 ESV
And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.
Leviticus 11:7 ESV
And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.
- laws about child birth would keep the babies and mothers from getting sick
Leviticus 12:2–6 ESV
“Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days. As at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying. She shall not touch anything holy, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed. But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her menstruation. And she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days. “And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering,
Leviticus 12:2-6
- laws about not eating fat would be more healthy
Leviticus 7:23–24 ESV
“Speak to the people of Israel, saying, You shall eat no fat, of ox or sheep or goat. The fat of an animal that dies of itself and the fat of one that is torn by beasts may be put to any other use, but on no account shall you eat it.
God’s laws would keep them physically and spiritually healthy
GOD’S COMMANDS WERE THE BETTER WAY TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
Ez
God’s laws would help them spirtually
- God gave “sabbaths” to the people to give them rest physically and spiritually.
Ezekiel 20:12 ESV
Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.
- The sabbath day was a weekly rest for everyone
- There were other sabbaths such as on the seventh year and Jubilee among other sabbaths.
Leviticus 25:4 ESV
but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.
We are no longer under the Old Law () but under the New Covenant () but the principle is still the same: God’s ways are the best way to live!

GOD’S COMMANDS FOR US ARE BEST

GOD’S COMMANDS BLESS US IN A NUMBER OF WAYS
Physical and emotional health come from following God’s truth
- How we think influences our mindset and attitude

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
- not being anxious leads to avoiding health and mental illness
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Romans 12:9–10 ESV
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
