What is in a Message

It is said that Christ implemented at least three techniques when sharing a message.
Three approaches to studying discipleship
Study His message on discipleship
What did he say
what did he mean
Study His methods on discipleship
Study how He modeled discipleship

The Message of Jesus?

Matthew
Matthew 4:17 NIV
From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
Repent: reason for repentance is the kingdom of heaven has come near.
Prior to the incarnation of Christ evidently the kingdom wasn’t near
Is the kingdom any closer today than it was at the time of Christ?
The church has had time to organize and coordinate
The Holy Spirit is guiding, directing, and gifting believers for service
Matthew 6:19 NIV
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
Our treasures are the spiritual treasures that are being stored in heaven
I was privileged to be apart of a number of young adults who committed their lives to serve God fully. That seems to be a long time ago. We live in very difficult days. Persecution, hurricanes, floods, fires, etc. Have forced people out of their homes, towns, and even countries.
I grew up hearing that I was supposed to live every day as if it were my last. It seemed so simple to live that out when I was younger and with less demands.
Matthew 6:31–33 NIV
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew
Don’t Worry:
What we eat or drink -
Why, because the Father knows you need them.
Matthew doesn’t say stop eating. He says seek the kingdom first. Seek His righteousness first! And all these things will be given to you as well.
This portion begins when Jesus sees the crowd and begins to teach. It begins in Chapter 5 - blessed are the poor in Spirit - for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 9:12–13 NIV
On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The message is “I have come to call the sinners - mercy above sacrifice
Matthew
Matthew 10:37–39 NIV
“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.
Whoever finds their life will lose it - whoever loses their life for Christ’s sake will find it.
Mark
Mark 10:45 NIV
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Serve as Christ served - for even the Son of Man
Luke 5:12–13 NIV
While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
Jesus is willing to clean our lives if we let Him.

The Message of Calvary?

“Lovingly leading people to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to faithfully follow him.”
Question:
What message do you think our building and property convey?
What message do you think the leadership team communicates?
What message do you think Sunday services communicates?
What message do you think our programs communicate?
Last Monday I got a bug bite that by Tuesday morning grew into a bullseye, a possible indication of lyme’s infection. I ended up at the E.R. at UPMC Jameson. The mix of people in the waiting room caught my attention. They were there because they knew they were sick and needed help. The church is not a hospital for the physically ill. The church is here to be salt and light to a spiritually sick world.
Jesus commanded that His disciples make disciples. More has been added to clarify the discipleship making process to include “that make disciples.”
So, let me encourage to think more about making disciples.
When People see this Church’s building and property do you think the connect “making disciples for Christ?”
Is our leadership team known as disciple makers?
Does our Sunday services support the discipleship making process?
Do our programs move people from being a non-believer to making disciples of Christ?
The church should stand out in the world. It should shine bright the fact that we are spending time with the Father through Christ. We should wear the guidance of the Holy Spirit like Christ did in His humanity.
Let’s improve in how we are reflecting the example of Christ.
Let’s,
call for repentance
Lay Spiritual Treasures in Heaven
Seek the kingdom first and His righteousness
Live out mercy rather than sacrifice
Give up our life for the live in Christ
Serve as Christ served
