Intro
Lots of reasons why people get tattoos
1. Self Expression or Individuality
2. Memories and Milestones
3. Symbols of Luck and Superstition
4. Commitment, Man!
5. Pure Adornment
We got one on a whim
I got this one 2 years ago.
It represents a victory to me in my life.
I bet you didn’t know that God has a tattoo too!
Is 49
Ill: I was watching an interview the pastor was asked is it ok for Christians to have tattoos.
No matter where you land on the subject theologically, make sure it’s something you can live with.
The permanancy expressed in the meaning of this word.
Before there was Dr. Tattoff, laser tattoo removal or any other reversal option, God put something permanent in His hand
You cannot ignore the symbolism of the hand…power.
Put that on the shelf, we’ll come back to that one.
to inscribe v. — to write or engrave as a lasting record.
Does that register with you?!?! God has made you a permanent part of Himself?
Background
As always, it’s important here to state the big story at work in Isaiah in order to grasp the power of Isaiah’s proclamation in chapter 49.
God’s people have been defeated, their temple destroyed.
They are taken in chains to Babylon, alienated from their land and their God.
This exile is a crisis of identity and faith.
Are they still God’s people?
How can they worship in this foreign land?
Into this crisis, Isaiah speaks a word of hope in these chapters.
God will send a servant who will do justice.
Indeed, it appears that much of second Isaiah (chapters 40-55) addresses the return of the Israelites to their homeland and the promise of a restored temple and nation.
The disorientation of exile is replaced by a new orientation that is more than just returning to the way things were before exile.
God has something much more in mind.

Progression of the Thought
43: 16 b: Your walls are continually before Me.
His concern is that they haven’t been made whole yet.
He’d made them a promise
Ill: Dad asked me to buy something.
I spent my money.
“How much did you spend?” He’s going to rest til I get it.
“I’m putting a check in the mail.”
Interp: God put them in captivity because of their disobedience.
While they were gone the enemies came in and pillaged and vandalized, which is why God says “your walls are continually before.”
You can’t put nothing in if there’s nothing to protect…the walls.
This is isn’t His concern.
The prophet Isaiah is being descriptive in his words and saying God is going to fix what’s wrong.
Because He’s made a promise that hasn’t been fulfilled.
Movement #1 - His Head
He tipped His hand what He was going to do by telling them what’s in His head
God is good with what your situation looks like because He has a track record of doing new things in old places!
don’t look where you are now, ‘cuz it’s probably desolate.
think back to when He made you a promise.
