Introduction

Many of you know that I enjoy going on a spring mission trip to work with Appalachian Trail hikers in Virginia. It’s a great trip - one of the best mission trips I’ve ever been on. We get the opportunity to meet all kinds of interesting people - like the guy we met one year who liked to hike in his boxer shorts.
The very first year I went, we met a hiker with the trail name “SOBO.” As I’ve told you before, trail hikers have their own unique vocabulary. “NOBO” refers to a northbound hiker while “SOBO” means a southbound hiker. This particular guy was clearly northbound, hiking from Georgia to Maine, so we were intrigued as to why his trail name was “SOBO.”
