What is Greatness?
The Disciples Ambition to be the greatest in the Kingdom.
What did you pursue in your life that was great? - List a bunch of things.
Ambition is fine, excellence is fine, but not at the expense of others.
The Disciple’s vision of Greatness - To take power for themselves and sit in important Kingdom positions.
Jesus’ Vision of Greatness is different.
Who are the Insignificant?
Jesus does not set up the child as a model to be imitated, for his culture had no romanticized notions about children.
They were not regarded as especially obedient, trusting, simple, innocent, pure, unself-conscious, or humble.
The point of comparison is the insignificance of the child on the honor scale.
The child had no power, no status, and few rights.
A child was dependent, vulnerable, entirely subject to the authority of the father; yet Jesus chooses such a one to represent those who are needy and lowly.
Who might be the insignificant in your context?
It might be children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.
Represent anyone who might be considered “insignificant” in your context?
Is there someone who sits by themself in the dining room?
Is there staff person who know one bothers to get to know?
Jesus calls us to look after those who are considered insignificant by our society and draw out their significance.
Greatness is Hospitality to the Insignificant.
Welcome - is about hospitality - Helping people feel like they belong
What do you do to reach out to your grandchildren? - Writing notes of encouragement, praying for them.
Growing Young - When Adults focus on authentic relationships with young people, their faith is renewed and grows.
