John 1:17 ESV
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
ETS: The order of God’s law reveals his grace and truth through the person of Jesus.
ESS: Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
In chaos and sin, only through the grace of Jesus do we find order in God’s law.
OSS: I want people to experience God’s grace through the order of His law in Jesus.
Let me help you understand what we must first overcome so that you and I can see..
As people of this fallen world, there are two failures that cause us to be out or order with God we must overcome.
We have an inadequate view of God’s law. (His reason; His holiness
We have an inadequate view of God’s law
We have an improper measurement of the lengths in which God has gone to save us.
We have an improper measurement of the lengths in which God has gone to save us.
—These two failures are:
an Inadequate view
an Improper measurment
…cause our view to be OUT OF ORDER.
And no one who is standing in a court of law before a judge, in this sinful world wants to be found “OUT OF ORDER.” So, because this world is temporary (like a vapor) it is vital for you and I to understand that spiritually speaking; eternally speaking...
Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
* So how does our failure; our inadequate view of God’s law prevent us from understanding the grace and truth offered through Jesus?
Because we SEE and therefore LIVE God’s law out of order.
So here the Apostle John is speaking specifically to the moral law that was given to Moses on Mnt. Sinia that we know as the 10 commandment (simply).

Ten Commandments List

You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall make no idols.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
There are 10 but what we miss is God has a specific order incased in His law that that instruct us not only how to live but in the order we must live it out.
This order is important, bc...
Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
Our failure is not properly see the order and what we tend to do is reverse it.
The 10 commandments were given in what some biblical scholars would call 2 separate tables (Not tablets—but if that helps you connect dots…cool)
The First table is found in
It makes up the first four of the commandments.
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall make no idols.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Keep the Sabbath day holy.
The first four have to do with God…our relationship to Him.
The Second Table (found )
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
These all have to do with our relationship with one another.
In fact we can see Jesus sum these two tables up in his response to the Scribe, who was trying to trip Him up (in Matt. 22:36-39),…notice how he responds in light of what we’ve just seen what was given to Moses. And specifically the ORDER...
Jesus response to the Scribe who asked, “Which is the greatest commandment of the law?”
Matthew 22:37–39 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Matthew 22:38–39 ESV
38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Matt.22:38-39
Do you see the order? Love God and love ppl as yourself. This order is vital
Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
Our failure; our inadequate view is that we don’t see God first in the Order.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
We elevate self in the Order. Think about it. We come first. We are busy people. We were raised to be go getters, chase the American dream. We don’t have time for spiritual things. We just want practical things that can help me get my wife to love me more, my kids on the all-star team, that promotion at work…fill in the blank.
You shall not steal.
WE ARE OUT OF ORDER. WE HAVE FORGOTTEN THE FIRST TABLE ALL TOGETHER. Our order is even suplimentented by our false interpretation of the 2nd table ppl. We replace ppl with self.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
It’s Me then God.
Which leads to our second failure…if we have “turned the tables” and put ourselves above God then we can’t see ourselves how God sees us in our sins. If we can’t see ourselves, nor how sinful we are in the presence of a mighty God bc we’ve removed him, usurped him in our hearts, how can we see God’s grace and truth provided in Jesus?
You shall not covet.
We can’t.
We have an improper measurement of the lengths in which God has gone to make provisions for our inability to keep his law, even if viewed in the proper order, but since we have it out our order, our biggest failure is to see what God has done in us and through in Jesus Christ.
We are to self-centered and we want to make it “practical” the problem is this so called “practicality” always starts with ourselves and with other people. We try every other option in our tool belt to fix the sin-fullness “the whats-wrong with us-ness.”
God has become the last resort. We are completely out of order and if we don’t see that we fail to see past our finite limitations and unabilites and only turn to God in desperation.
Are we not always desperate? Have we not reached a point of failing ourselves and others enough to see our need? Can we not see that we have turned the tables, of the law the tables of our lives, upside down?
How can I love myself if I don’t know myself? I how can I love my neighbor when I don’t know who I really am?
And if we are real even if we could properly love ourselves without knowing God in right relationship, we wouldn’t obey the 2nd table anyway, because we always start with self…not neighbor.
But we don’t we are always out of order.
Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
But there is hope.
Because...
John 1:17 ESV
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John
In it’s proper order God’s law awakens you not just to your sinfulness, but also who He created you to be and once we know ourselves then and only then do we begin to glean what “unmerited favor” this grace truly is.
I want people to experience God’s grace through the order of His law in Jesus.
You see the grace of the law is see our need and then to know that it is in the person of Jesus were the OT law and NT grace intersect. That reveals that we are out of Order and that God provides the perfect order through his law. Not that we can keep it, but that we would see the One who He provided to fulfill it for us.
Because it’s…Only in the order of God’s law can we find grace and truth in Jesus.
Love God first, let Him show you how to love yourself as He loves you, so you can love others.
Once you put God in His proper place…it’s easy to hear Jesus’ call. “Repent. (Turn away from your sin and turn towards God) because the Kingdom of God is at hand.”
