17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
17 Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.
Paul had lived a life that the Philippian people could follow. The example he had set for them and was saying “live as I have lived”
a. He had preached the gospel to them and now he wanted them to follow his example.
b. Paul did not say “do as I say” He lived a live where he could say, “do as I do” “Live as I live”
c. That should be true in are lives. We should live in way that we are examples to other believers.
“mark then which walk so as ye have us for an exsample”
NASB: observe then who walk according to the pattern you have in us”
1.In Philippi there were the believers who put forth effort to live as Paul lived. They pressed toward the prize of the high calling.
a. But there were those who were less spiritual who lived different ways.
b. Today there are those who take Jesus as their Lord: Those who walk the walk.
c. There are those Jesus is not first, but other things come first.
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
18 For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ,
“For there are many”
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
a. It seems that there were many of the Philippians who professed the be Christians, but were not truly born again.
b. There were enemies in disguise. Those that were bad enough to, they didn’t nothing for the cause of Christ. They were “wolves in sheep’s clothing”
c. People outside the church take professing Christians to be just what they say they are, and when things that they do prove them to be false, Christianity looks bad.
“Of whom I have told you often”
a. Paul never did attempt to whitewash sin. When he preached in Philippi he did not compromise the truth in order to keep friends.
b. How did demonstrate the spirit of Jesus, but he did not attempt to over up or excuse the guilt of sin.
c. When someone preached falsely, he made it known and never apologized for it.
“and now tell you even in weeping”
a. Paul did not find pleasure in the fact that there were those who did these things. He cause a big problem for the cause of Christ.
b.
c. The false teaching that is going on today should cause us to weep.
“they are the enemies of the cross of Christ”
a. Paul takes it pretty deep here saying that they an enemy of the cross.
b.
